Coring wood

Looking to get a custom cue made wit ebony or cocobola..but the cuemaker i was talking to said he had to core out the wood and use a maple plug.

Does this change the way the cue will hit? I know some other cue makers i.e. southwest...refuse to core their wood.

How much does it change the way it hits if i do this? I thought about making the butt thinner to manage the weight instead? but if this is not possible. Is coring the wood that dramatic?

Might be better to post this in the ask the cuemaker question. Some things that would help the cm is what weight do you want the cue? what kind of joint? where do you want the balance point? how forwarded weighted do you want it?

I believe Mike Capone, an excellent cue maker, cores all of his cues. I can tell you from experience that the coring makes his cues very consistent. I have a few of his cues and I can pick up any of them and play, with no difference in the hit.
If Capone cues are any example of coring cues, I say the coring is a good thing.
