Cracked dowel

Hey folks, how surprised should I be when/if this ebony dowel explodes while turning in my MidSized Cuesmith?

I got it for free and thought I could salvage some rings or butt caps.

here’s a picture of both ends freshly cut with the bandsaw so you can check the cracks. Previous person tried to epoxy it together so I’m a bit sketched out.

As a long time woodturner, those cracks go quite deep, and unless you can find a use for the wood between them, the dowel would be useless. Even if you soak superglue in them, they may hold together, but they will show, and more than likely split years later. Wood is not that expensive, just buy some good wood. When I go to conventions, the wood suppliers unload some great stuff on Sundays when they don't want to haul it home. while I don't see dowels like that, square or rectangle good sized pieces of really nice wood generally go in the $20-$60 range. Last convention I went to was three years ago though, and things may have changed since then.

Saw the ends off a little at a time until the cracks go away. Then see how long of a piece you really have.

Thanks Chris, I guess I’ll make some checkers while I play with the bandsaw.

I once sawed up two different wood turning squares and glued the squares down to make a checker board. Then I cut up two different wood dowels to make the checkers.
