I went to a bar/poolroom the past couple Fridays and one of the guys asked me if I was joining in. I said sure if it's OK and he said put your cue together. They play every day and either 8-ball or 9-ball depending on what the next tournament will be. They have 5-6 tables going and you play one game at a time and the losers move on to the next open table. Each guy pays $7 for the day which is cheap for a day out. I call it the old guys club lol and most of these old boys can play and take it pretty serious. I'm finding out quick you have to work for every shot .

I'm new to the province and not knowing anyone it's a great way to meet people and get out to play. The wife drops me off and goes shopping and picks me up 5-6 hours later, we go out for dinner then drive the hour to get home

My favorite days at the pool hall were ring games with my buddies. Win or lose, it was always a good time. I always felt ring games were more social and relaxing than a heads-up battle.
 
Reminds me of a weekly tournament we used to play at an RV park I stayed at several winters in south Texas. Every Friday morning we would start at 9:00 and end at noon. We had six 8-foot tables in the rec hall. We generally drew from 10 to 15 players, no entry fee or sign up sheet, and just playing for bragging rights.

The way we worked it was this. The tables were numbered 1 though 6 with #6 being at the back of the room and #1 at the front. As players would come in they would just pair up randomly on an open table and begin playing. The tables were generally all filled by 9:05. It was race to one, with the loser staying at that table and the winner moving to the next lowest numbered table. Once you moved up to #1 things changed, with the loser going back to #6 and the winner staying on #1. If there were more than 12 players in the tournament the loser on #1 went to the back of the line of players waiting to cycle onto #6. (If there were enough players in the queue a euchre game usually broke out.) The object was to get to table 1 and hold it as long as you could. The "winner" was the player holding table 1 when it ended at noon.

I put winner in quotes above, because the prize was that the winner got to brush and cover the tables, sweep up and clean the cups and coffee maker before leaving. No big deal because usually 3 or 4 other guys would stay around to help, too. Fun times. :)
