Crazy Frank Piasecki 1949-2014

We used to call him "Buffalo Frank."

While Strickland, Varner, and Rempe were making the headlines, I was perfectly content watching a couple of roadsters engage in games of stake.

Buffalo Frank's trademark was shooting every shot with the rake. He showed up at Bill and Billie's in Glen Burnie, MD sometime in the mid-'80s looking for action. Geese, a well-known one-pocket player, stepped up to the plate.

The two went back and forth trying to put a game together. Finally, Geese made him an offer: He'd play one-handed, a dime a game, one pocket, with Buffalo Frank using the rake on every shot.

Buffalo Frank figured he had himself a lock. He didn't. Geese busted him, but the two remained friends. There's something special about the mutual respect between two gunslingers willing to put it all on the line. I always liked Buffalo Frank. He was funny, had his own style, and certainly wasn't afraid to put on a show.

Those were some interesting days in the poolroom. And sometimes the best stories weren't about the guys making the headlines.
