Cue Ball Question

ThePoolHustler

U win some! U throw some!
Hi Jennifer...

I have a fairly simple question to ask you. Is it true that the cue ball jumps/lifts off the table on ALMOST EVERY shot? I have been having this discussion with some other players and they don't think this is true. From everything I have read and watched, the CB jumps/lifts off the table on ALMOST EVERY shot. Can you shed some light on this subject for me? Maybe some other professionals can answer this question also.

Thanks for your time!

A very small portion of the ball is in contact with the table as the ball is a sphere. When you hit the ball below center or at the cenerline with a lot of force the ball has a tendency to rise due to "Bernoulli's Principle"(this is called lift). When you hit the ball above center it tends to "bounce up off the table" in addition to the afore mentioned principles of lift. :D

Thanks for the response Terry. This is what I thought. I guess we can say that the CB lifts/rises off the table on ALMOST EVERY shot then, right?

If the cue is not parallel to the table, and the butt of the cue is elevated the cue will jump ever so slightly.

I'm no scientist but common sense tells me that if you shoot hard the cue ball may leave the table "on almost every shot". If you're playing 8 ball or 14:1 maybe the cb leaves the table very rarely, like only on breaks. Slow rolling the cb probably keeps it on the table "on almost every shot"..

I think you and your friends are both right. The cb does leave the table frequently but probably not "on almost every shot".... unless you guys are hammering the cb.

So would you say that in the movie Pool Hall Junkies the cb left the table on almost every shot? LOL :D

That sounds about right.
