Yes ... I use maple rounds as shaft wood all the time and find it makes excellent shafts. <grin>

I dont know where you live but you really need to get the wood in your hands and look at it closely before you buy it.
If that is impractical you are better off buying the laminated shaft wood as it is more consistant in quality.
Good hard maple shaft wood is getting very difficult to find and their are a lot of cuemakers looking for it.

Their are some cuemakers that will buy a large lot of maple, cut it into 1" squares or rounds, pick out the best for themselves and sell the rest to recover their investment.
Nothing wrong with this and I would do the same if I could.
Just be aware that really good shaft wood is hard to come by and most of what is for sale is not the top grade.
