I have 5 bar cues I got through a trade of stuff that have been cut down. I thought it would be fun to try with very limited tools to try to put a pin on them mainly just to see if I can. There is one valley and the rest are Chinese so they are not high dollar cues even if converted by the best. My question is what should the diameter of the butt be were the joint is. Some of them are cut longer and some are shorter. Knowing this size will help me determine if I have a possibility or firewood.

The diameter of the joint should be whatever size you want your cues to be. The range of diameters for typical cues is roughly .800 to .850, the mode behind on the higher end.
.840 is pretty much the 'standard' for production cues today. You want this diameter at 29" up from the bottom of the cue, typically. Larger or smaller will still play fine.
