Well, that's not entirely true. There is what's called "Ab-Lam" (or something like that) which is real abalone stripped and laminated into sheets. You can definately smell the Abalone shell when you're cutting the stuff, but the dust is highly toxic, as is the shell. With the way the colors vary and change in Abalone, the laminated vareity, IMHO, looks just as good as the shell and is much easier to work, not to mention much more efficient to use. I've gotten it in as big as 12" X 12" X 1/8" sheets. The ablam is considerably more expensive than the natural shell, and ivory too for that matter, but is well worth it.
The cue I made for John Brumback has Abalone (Ab-Lam) segmented points, the longest parts being about 5 inches long.
