I was asked to make a cue for kid 5 years old and standing around 3ft tall... the father observed his kids liking to pool... I'm not sure how to go about with the cue length  standard length shaft with short butt like jump cue? same shaft and butt length?

standing around 3 ft tall not real big

id consider cutting off at both ends of a dufferin house cue and re-tapering it

for him unless dad is taking milk crates to the pool hall he is using it at home
and if not its not like it would be too much trouble to take his 30-40 inch cue in the back seat

42 inchess to scale with your normal size joint so a longer shaft can be added, Joe Porper can make the case. Shaft size, between 10 and 12 mm.

My step-son is almost 5 and I just bought him a cuetec youth's cue. It is 42 inches long, has a standard taper and shaft. Really nice stick for his age, and he can bang it around alot better than a regular cue. He is also very tall for his age, coming in at almost 46 inches and 45 pounds. I might would recommend these depending on how serious the kid is about pool.

Mike, how would I go about the cues proportion... if it's 42" with an .850 joint would the shaft and butt be 21" each? or I'd go with a 29" shaft and a 13" butt?

I've done these for gifts for a few people. I do 21 inches on the butt and shaft. Right to scale, take off equal amounts from your 3 areas of the butt. I do the same joint as my regular cues so I can make longer shafts as the child grows. By doing it to scale it makes the butt section automatically smaller to fit the childs small hands. They can use the same cue til their 10 to 12 years of age with increase in shafts usually twice. One inch each time. So you would need a case for 44 inches and use the foam plugs to make up the difference in space. And of course because I did these as gifts a few people that were special to me for one reason or another, Others would send their kids over to ask for a cue. So I stopped doing the gifts part. A gift comes from the heart, asking for it is just trying to take advantage. So be careful.

update

Made to specs just like what Mike webb advised... Ziricote forearm, smooth black leather wrap, Ziricote buttsleeve with granadillo buttcap... 42" cue with 0.850" at the joint 12mm shaft :D

Can't get the lighting right though...

This was before the final finishing took place... hard when you only get to borrow a cam when it's available... and need it when it's unavailable... The ziricote's color is somewhat greyish-greenish with black steaks... the color didn't show on the pics... any tips on lighting???

Same amount of work buddy... I thought I would just breeze thru it :o
Too bad I wasn't able to get a good clear pic of the forearm, it's a very pretty piece of ziricote... took the pics before the shaft and JPs were finished. Also put in that smooth leather wrap just for learning to put it better :D

I was inspired after reading this. Here's a cheap bar cue cut down to 42". 0.835 joint (I shot for .840) and 11mm at the tip. Nothing fancy, but it should work well for a 5- or 6-year old.
