Cue joint issue

Not sure if its ok to ask about this or not, but my Mcdermott cue's joint is starting to fall apart. When I attempt to tighten the shaft down the joint has about 2-3 mm of play (on the butt side) that it rotates. Is there a way to correct this without he need to send it off to be repaired?

I doubt if you can repair this yourself but any cue mechanic should not have a problem. Once it is repaired chances are good that the joint will need to be refaced on a lathe and as such a cue mechanic is needed.

From what you are saying, it sounds like the pin or the collar is loose. If this is the case, then it will need to be repaired. I suggest sending it back to Mcdermott or have a cuemaker do it for you.

Is the collar cracked or just loose? If it is not cracked it should be able to just be reglued on and refaced. If the collar is spinning with the shaft on and tight it needs to be refaced anyway to make sure the collar and wood are flush. Take it to your local cue repair guy that you trust as it sounds fairly simple to fix.
 
If this McD cue has the stainless collar with the 3/8x16 QR pin,
the pin and collar are a single unit. The pin and collar are one pc.
You're not going to fix it by yourself. It's a horrible design.
I've written my analysis of this design on at least a couple of occasions.
Do a search if your interested.

To properly address this issue, the joint should be disassembled and rebuilt CORRECTLY.
You can still have the stainless collar and you can still have the QR pin.
The modification sets the NEW pin in the forearm rather than just sitting it on the surface of the collar.
The additional wght of the new/longer pin is off-set by the use of a thin-wall SS collar.
I've been doing these with some regularity as of late.
The result is a much stronger design.

I have the same design in my McD thought it would be an improvement but went back to 3/8 x 10 for a better hit as well. IMHO JIM
