cue joint with a edge?

I just wanted to ask, I have a cue with a slight lip between the shaft and the butt, right at the joint. Is there anything i can do to make it perfectly flush? I have seen this on tons of cues, especially when someone orders a different shaft for that cue...

How does a cuemaker address this?

If the shaft is larger than the butt, the collar of the shaft can be turned down and refinished to match up with the butt. If the butt is larger than the shaft, you'd probably have to remove and replace the shaft collar with a larger one and taper the collar to match the butt. On my playing cue, the butt is a good 1/16" larger all the way around than the Predator shaft I shoot with and it doesn't seem to bother me.

Something that will go a long way in avoiding this is, when ordering a new aftermarket shaft, tell the person taking the order what cue you will be using it on.
When I get a work order, it may say something like :
Build 314-2, 5/16x18, black collar.
There is very rarely a joint dia. given so for that shaft I would bring it in at .835". Yet I know 5/16x18 can vary form .825" to .850" and then some.
So please don't blame the builder if you didn't tell him what you want.

Calipers are cheap ($15). You may think that you'll never use them but they will certainly help to keep you from having this problem.
