Cue length for my girlfriend.

I agree that cue weight is not really an issue. I'm over 6 feet tall and weigh about 200 pounds and I use an 18.5 oz cue. Mike Massey suggested that I switch to this weight in 1995 and he was absolutely correct.

57" works just fine

58" should be fine. if anything 57 maybe but i wouldn't suggest going with a 54" cue unless you had it customized with an extension. like a mezz extension or one like kevin deroo uses

Yes, the world beaters of old played mostly with 57" and even shorter cues. The 58" cue became the standard only a few decades ago. I often suggest a 57" cue for shorter people, but most respond with something like, "A man uses a full-size cue!". Such nonsense. I have half a dozen 57" cues that play very well for me. I also prefer shorter break cues, which I can control better than a full size.

I always say, try something before you discard the idea....

Some of these old ones are better than what's being asked lately. But if I noticed this in ''09, I'd have asked Why are we recommending length, weight and balance differences in new cues for someone who is just learning how to play? What happened to "play for a while than make a custom cue choice".

Except that I agree with Donny that a shorter cue is more accurate for many players. :)
