Cue length

Another thread was discussing SVB removing his cue extension. I think him and Fedor now put the extension on for longer power shots.
What’s everyone’s opinion, I think it makes complete sense to have a longer cue if your arm span is longer.
It can’t be optimal to have the same cue length for a 5 ft 4 person and a 6 ft 4 person?
Maybe it does t make sense to change if you have used a standard cue length for years but anybody straying or with a lot of scope to improve, I’m sure that must be the way to go. Otherwise tall people will play shots with their hand hanging over the end or their elbow angle , less than optimal?

Just a B- player here but I am 6'8 and standard length cues feel too short to me. I was using a butt extension but it felt like there was much too much weight at the back of the cue, plus I wanted my hand on the wrap not back by the but cap. I switched to using a joint extension and that is working great for me. My cues are now between 61-63 inches depending on shaft and joint length but my primary player is 63" and I love it.

It all comes down to personal preference and results. After Earl, Shane, and Shaw started using one years ago, I gave a 6 inch extension a try and I've really liked it- it adds power and I feel like it stabilizes my stroke- it may be a placebo, but I think I play better with it. I'm not tall- only 5'9". The only real drawbacks are for very delicate shots and when there isn't enough space at some bars in league matches.

I think that people should at least give it a try before knocking it.

Absolutely!! My playing cue is 59" but my last 2 fingers were always wrapped around the cue bumper, I had a 2" custom made joint extension made, works perfectly. My hand usually ends up behind the wrap but that does not bother me.
That raises another question I have always had. Many people talk about the importance of the balance point of a cue or whether front/rear weighted, doesn't where you hold the cue come into play when talking about balance points? I have seen some league players whose cues were as tall as they were. I guess they saw players with extensions and figured it was the way to go regardless of the purpose of that extension.

I am 6’6” and have started playing with a 60” cue. My game got more consistent as I felt it was easier to get into shooting position. Some years ago I took a couple of lessons from a top instructor and he immediately said I needed a longer cue. I haven’t really tried extensions throughly, feel like they mess up with the balance of the cue.

I'm just a little over 6'5" and have pretty well settled on 60" cues. I tried a 62" for a while, but I ended up playing with a longer bridge length and that seemed to hurt accuracy for me. I think if I could have adjusted the balance point it may have worked out better and made me move the cue back in my hand instead of the extra length being all in the front. It just felt odd to me to move my grip hand up.
I've always tended to favor a front heavy cue. One thing to consider is if you are playing with most production cues that have a big weight bolt in the very back of the cue, it's going to feel very different with an extension on it compared to custom cue that is more naturally weighted on the front end, or a cue that has a steel joint with a big pin etc. A cue with the weight in the rear would probably feel better with a mid-extension.
I'm not willing to spend the money just to try it, but I would really like to have a week to mess around with something like a McDermott H-Series just to experiment with moving the weight and then adding/removing extensions.

6'4", 3" mid cue. Gets me anywhere on the table and fits my stroke much better. Might have something to do w my long-ass bridge length. 😂

I'm right at 6'2" in my stockings and was shooting with a cue that was 6" longer than most long before Shane , Earl or most others had thought about it or were using a cue that length .
I still bring it out from time to time just because with it's 2 extra shafts in a 2" pvc pipe case that appears to be a fishing rod case more than anything else .

Then if you're not careful I may even win a few games or get a honorable mention for trying my best .
