Cue Maker Advice!

I need some advice on a very nice JW cue that I own. My cue has a 5/16x14 Stainless Steel piloted joint. I bought this cue used thinking I could use a predator shaft or some shafts that I made for that joint type on it, but after I got the cue I found out that the joint pin wouldn’t screw into any other 5/16x14 thread shaft. The only shafts that will fit it are the two shafts that came with the cue. I measured the existing pin and it’s about .020” OD larger than the pin in a Tim Scruggs cue that any shaft for a 5/16x14 joint will fit.

How much trouble would it be to replace the 5/16x14 joint pin with a more standard 5/16x14 pin and would I be ruining the value of my cue if I changed the joint pin? The cue is a JW and it’s rather expensive.

Thanks for any help or suggestions,

A little piece of advice...just go buy a Predator blank and have a cuemaker make you a shaft from that blank that will fit your cue. Be MUCH easier to do that than to change the pin out in my opinion.

Pretty cue you have there though, what little I can see of it.

Hello,

You will receive more help if you post this in the ask the cuemaker section where it belongs.

Gremlin,

The more I read your posts, the more I realize what an arrogant asshole you are. Why can't you be a little nicer when posting responses to threads like this. And it hasn't just been this post. Yesterday I read the post in response to Roscoe's thread, and you were just as arrogant. Some people might be new to the board or don't know all the relevant places to post things.

I'm not saying that you should not have advised him of the correct location to post, just quit being so almighty acting about things, and stating your reply in a nicer manner.

It seems that of all the female players you chase, you could get one of them to give you some.

tap, tap, Mike...

Glad someone noticed... my thread got REALLY offtrack due to his actions, so I thought it best to just delete it.

I don't harbor any ill will towards him, though.. I mean - he is a psycho stalker..

SC Cues,

I bought a cue from Whitey Spach in Charleston,SC at Hurricane cues a few years ago, and had the same problem. I talked with him about it, and he said that he used a full sized 5/16-14 pin and other shafts wouldn't screw completely onto the butt. He suggested that I run a die down the pin, and that it would fit. I did that, and the shafts screwed on fine after that.

I don't know how much oversized the pin is, but maybe you (or a cue repair guy in your area) could try running a 5/16-14 die down the pin.

5/16 -14 pin

If I remember correctly Stroud uses an Acme thread as opposed to a full thread. Therefore, I think it would be wiser to alter the shaft and not the joint pin. Hope this helps

Your Joss West is worth much more in it's origianl condition, so do not mess with the joint screw. I suggest sending the shaft to Stroud and get him to run his tap into your insert. This would modify the 5/16-14 regular thread to his acme and solve your problem.

value is always maintained when you have the cuemaker redo the cue. if both scruggs and JW are threaded the same, i don't see how they don't share compatable shafts unless one was generic and the other tapped his own. check your PM for stroud's phone#

Thanks everyone for the information on my cue. Bill Stroud confirmed that my cue has an Acme thread joint pin and he strongly advised leaving it as is which I definately intend to do. The shafts that came with the cue are in perfect condition and I just wanted to be able to try a predator shaft to see if I liked the way it played better than the standard shafts. I've never run into an Acme thread joint pin before, but now I know what I have thanks to everyone's help.

I'm fairly new to this group and I didn't realize that there was an "ask the cue maker" section or I would have posted my thread there.

Thanks again,

By the way, that's a beautiful cue.

Don't you dare touch the joint pin. If you get that desperate please send me the cue and I will give it a full workout to see of you really need the prredator shaft.;-)

Don't mess w/ Stroud's work. As he told you. Glad you aren't going to mess with it.
