What would be the best quality cue for 800.00 to 1000.00 dollars.

That's like asking what's the best tasting steak in the $40-$50 range. At that price, they should all be of high quality. Just find your preferences. For me, you can't go wrong with Schon in that range, but they're not considered "custom" by a lot of people here.Jody C said:

Custom doesn't mean better, in fact, often times; it means worse. That's the way I see it.
I would say that in that range , from any reputable builder/manufacturer , they all will be at a super high quality. Dozenz of choices there at least.
Beyond that price range , your mostly getting into 'options'.

You could get a nice cue from Pat Diveney in that price range. Great playing cue IMO.

If I show up at his shop with $1000 I guarantee you I can walk out with a cue. He'll charge about $500 for a sneaky pete with 2 shafts, but it takes a year to get it. Around here, they're all over the place though. I just picked up a 10 yr old sp for $400 with a year old shaft and a predator 314.
Also, I hear Ernie Martinez is making cues again up in Denver. Talk about a solid hitting cue. I'm sure a plain jane from him would only be about $300

Last week I wouldn't have given this answer. I just bought a Darrin Hill rosewood sneaky from Matt, Jamie's partner at www.New2YouQs.com . He posts here as Lenoxmjs . Even though I previously had a Hill cue and I expected it to play well I didn't have any idea what I would be getting. Fellas, I haven't played with a Gus, or even a Barry. I haven't played with a Cog, but if you read my signature you can see that I've tried a few. I've been sold on Daytons and Olneys, and I've liked everything that I've tried with a large pin and a flat faced wood to wood joint. This sneaky with it's 3/8 X 10 pin and a phenolic collar, and a 4 oz shaft I might add, plays as well as anything I've ever used ! PERIOD ! Minimal deflection. Great action on the cueball. Table length draw shots with no problem. 3 rail follow on a rail cut shot. If I do my part this cue is fabulous. This is with what I think is a Le Pro tip

Since this was a sneaky, the shaftwood has a little grain runout, and I had my local cuemaker blend the ferrule to the shaft a little more. Small price to pay for a 4 oz shaft that hits like no tomorrow, and the rosewood in the butt is extra nice. All my top player friends who tried this cue want to buy it !
I think Matt has one more of these sneakies left, bacote IIRC. The cues have a small band in the butt of another contrasting wood, ala Darrin Hill, and what I think is a melamine ferrule. Jump on this one or another Hill sneaky. Darrin is making a name for himself, and a well deserved one...Tom
