Please let me first start by saying THANK YOU to all who are on here. I have recently fell in love with pool and reading these posts is increasing my education and knowledge about cues 10 fold. Thank you for your time and patience dealing with more ignorant billaird players.

I will submit my question first and the story behind it second as not to waste anyones time if they are not interested....

How hard is it to tighten the joint under the wrap? How expensive would it be to fix (on average)?

I bought a helmstetter about 18 years ago right before I gave up pool. (life got in the way and I am jsut getting back to it). I had it for a week and I started hearing a squeak every time I hit the ball. I was told it was a loose joint to I took it to an old pool pro by the name of leo galli but he didn't fix the problem. I was told he poured hot glue in the joint by the guy who owned the pool hall. I was then told to send it back to helmstetter. When I called them, they said since I did not buy it directly from a helstetter distributor, they could not warranty it and I should send it to them for examination. Soon after that, I stopped playing pool. I remember loving the cue but stopped playing. Now that I am back into playing pool, I would like to get it fixed. I recently went to the 8 ball bax champoinships in philadephia figuring there was a quality repair person there. He stated it was probably the joint, then said it wasn't. Then he said it was probably the weight bolt and tightened it, but the squeak was still there. He said it was the joint under the wrap and that the cue was shot and I should break with it or just break it in half.

When you grip the wrap low and shake the cue, whether if shaft is on or not, you here a squeak and I always thought it was under the wrap. I called adam cues in Long Island and they put me in touch with Mike Miller but I have yet to call him because I frankly don't want to waste his time or a lot of money to fix a cue I paid 350 for 20 years ago.

It might be an easy fix. The wrap will need to come off & the cue examined. It sounds to me like the "A" joint is loose as if there weren't enough glue or the glue simply broke down. It could be pulled apart, refaced, and reassembled with fresh epoxy & be like new again. However, it could have some cracked or busted up wood under there & in that case it's a much more difficult fix. My suggestion would be find a cuemaker in your area or on here who isn't too busy & let them take a gander. Might be simple.

It would require removing the wrap, cutting a channel or two down to the pin in the "A" joint, (if any) injecting epoxy into the loose joint, and then installing a new wrap.

I had to fix a buzzy "A" joint on one of my first cues and that is the way I did it. (never use super glue in the "A" joint)

Sorry ... not allowed to quote prices here.

Sounds like a pretty good remedy without having to take anything apart.
