I soon may be coming back into possession of the first cue I ever paid $100 or so dollars for and I would greatly appreciate any information a cue builder, refinisher, or restorer may be willing to share with me.
I bought the cue new from the A.E. Schmidt Company in St. Louis, MO back in 1973 and it has been in the possession of the owner of a pool hall, where I worked as a kid, ever since 1973. When I left the area in 1973, I told him to keep it for me and I'd use it whenever I passed back through and it's been many years since I've ever had a chance to do that.
I haven't seen the cue in quite a few years, but the last time I saw it I noticed that the wrap was worn and soiled and the shaft would need to be replaced. I can't remember if I ordered it with two shafts, but whatever the case they would need to be replaced.
One of the questions I have is would the the collar rings from the shaft be able to be cut off, drilled out, and reused if the restorer is unable to match the old collars and/or rings?
I can't remember exactly what the cue looks like, but it has plastic-type rings in the bottom of the butt or a plastic-type butt plate. From the conversation I had today with the pool room owner, he said that someone told him they think the points may be from a Brunswick Titleist blank.
I won't know exactly what I have or whether it is worth the money to restore until I get it back, but for old-times-sake I'd like to play with the cue again as it was when I first bought it. I may not play like I did then, but it will bring back old memories. If that stick could talk, it could tell some interesting stories and it has been in literally thousand upon thousand of dollars worth of money games. FWIW, I can say that most of the games I played with it, I took home the cash...don't know if I can say the same for the guy who has had it for the last 40 years.
Does anyone have an idea of what it would cost to restore an old cue like this? I just sent my old McDermott C-14 back to them today and it will cost about $250 to refurbish it and make me an additional shaft. If it costs more than that to refurbish the A.E. Shmidt, I will only do so if it has a Titleist blank.
Would also appreciate any information on who you would recommend to restore it, if I should decide to do so.
