Cue smith lathe

Go to www.taigtools.com. Can someone tell me the difference between this lathe and the one Hightower sells. It to is a micro lathe. The bed is a lot shorter (easy fix) but the tailstock, cross slide, and headstock look idenical. This sells for less than $400, and less than $180 with out a motor. You can go to Minarik Drives and get the exact motor and controller that unique product uses for there equiptment for around $250 and have a very nice machine for less than $500. Sure there a few spacific tool rest design to hold a pool cue but it looks very simalar to a Taig micro lathe. What do you guys think.
Thanks
John

they are close cousins

Looks to me like they are close cousins. I don't think you will fit many cues through that ..343 spindle on the Taig though. I'd like to find a much longer piece of that bed material myself, let me know if you find it. I came up empty with a quick net search awhile back.

I have some issues with my Cuesmith Deluxe and will probably buy the replacement parts for a Taig. I guess the proof will be in the pudding when I see if they fit or not.

Chris will be more than happy to sell you just a bed, give him a call, it isn't out of line at all. As for the taig parts, they are basically the same.

The spindle on the lathe is smaller, but the rest is pretty much spot on. This is of course for Chris' smaller lathe. For his bigger lathe, the carriage is different as it is setup for a bigger headstock and tapering attachments.

Thanks

Thanks. I'm actually looking for a longer piece than Chris' bed or at least the one on my Deluxe. I think that is the longest bed he offers.

Do you have the 6' bed? If you don't mind me prying, what are you thinking about doing with something longer than that? Curiosity drives me, I apologize in advance.

hightower has a contract woth them to make his lathe thery will not make cetain aspects that he ahs designed for anyone else. He has exclusive rights to them . don';t htink you can but his items anywhere else. Others have tried to steal his patent. .

like Joe barringer lol. He';s crook

If You need parts for taig, ask Chris, He very easy to deal with. I have gone to him for alot of Mine, even on My own projects, and for what his prices were I realized I could'nt have them machined, or make some of them Myself any cheaper then what I got them from Him for. He his very reasonable, and has plenty of personal experience & knowledge of these lathes & parts. I even buy My stock taig parts from him, as he is dealer for those also, and I'd rather have My dollars in the cuebuilding world going to someone I know that's in the same field as me.
The stock taig is very limited for cuework, you may be able to do ferrules with one after some modifing, that is with a large enough through hole for that, but If your planning on building cues or serious repairs, I would think very hard about that, as others have mentioned it's just too far out of the stock lathes capilbilties, and I don't think you will have an easy time building one that does what the cuesmith lathes can for less money. I went that route On My pantograph, and altough I'm happy with it, with all things said, between cost of materials of the amount of time I spent on It, It would have been cheaper & a whole lot alot easier to just buy one already built. Just My opinion here, from My own experiences with taig componets. :) I'm sure he would sell you whatever parts you need, and can't fabricate on Your own though. Good Luck with It.
