Howdy,

Just out of curiosity (cough), what might be the minimum and maximum butt diameters one might see in a cue ? I have measured my own cues, and can extrapolate (guess?:o ) at some extremes, but many here will have seen and handled a brazilion cues and I'd love to here about the extremes you've seen.

My cues, in order of convenience :

1.224" Falcon M5
1.210" Dufferin Shadow, made in Canada :p
1.248" Old ?? house cue. the father-in-laws cue ... RIP Douglas
1.213" Dufferin house cue #1, made in Canada :p
1.290" Dufferin house cue #2, it's getting old :o
1.298" Brunswick by McDermott (almost forgot it)

My guesses :

1.000" Smallest little butt ever built ? A Twiggy Twig, as it were :D
1.375" Pretty much as big as a big ol' butt might ever git ?

OK, OK, .... I'm designing a cue clamping thingamajig (sorry for the techno-terms), and want to make it as efficiently as possible being the cheap man that I am. Also, on the 'other end' of the clamping range, say mid-forearm, about 6" up-butt from the joint  , my cues are all between .990" and .920", so I figger that about the smallest diameter a guy might grab on a cue is about 7/8", or 0.875" ... sound close ? (it's gotta be a larger diameter than the joint assuming a tapered butt, and don't we all).

Sooooooo, collecting all these wild guesses, the clamp should have a range of 0.875" to 1.375" to accomodate most any cue being held in any typical position from way out by the bumper to mid-forearm-by-the-points ? Help me out here fellas, please, cause I don't want this thing to drop a cue, or not be able to fit a cue, especially if I buy one of your craftsmanships ;) .

Thanks for any input you may have.

I've got a half dozen old Titlist cues that are well over 1.400 at the rear.

My BLACK HEART Qs are 1.265" diameter at the end of the butt cap & .830" diameter at the joint. Does that help?...JER

Everything helps, thanks a lot for the info Dick and Jer (and Dale via PM). My design is to operate in close quarters, so I don't want to make it too big. So far I'm leaning towards increasing the maximum butt diameter spec to 1.450, based on what I've been told.

Thanks again folks, I now owe you a look at the thing once it's out of my mind and into metal.
