Cue Sports - Worthy of the Olympics?

Cue sports do not need to be in the Olympics. For most of the sports currently in the Olympics, the Olympic competition is the pinnacle of the competitor's careers. In track, badminton, archery, wrestling, kayaking, and many others, the Olympics are the top competition. Each sport may hold yearly world championship events, but the Olympics are head and shoulders above them.

Cue sports would fall into the same category as soccer and tennis. Soccer has the World Cup, and the Olympics is a second-tier event. The same is true for tennis. Winning Wimbledon means more than a gold medal.

Besides, a snooker tournament limited to 3 entrants from the United Kingdom and a 9-ball tournament limited to 3 entrants from the Philippines could never be considered world-class events. The current World Championships would always have more prestige.

And just for trivia, bowling was included in the 1984 Los Angeles games as an exhibition sport. It didn't make it to 1988.

Coryh, your point is well explained and to add to that, Golf as big as it is will not be in the olympics along with cue games. Maybe some day....But can someone on this thread explain to me how badmiton got to the olympics, because I consider myself a badmiton champion. I prove it day in and day out to my niece (11) and nephew (17) every time we play....

I've never had much intrest in this sport exept when I was a kid. I think its in Olympics, because is attractive and fun to watch. Entertainment is as important as money in the Olympics.

In 2012 a few sports will not longer be present at the Olympics.
Like for example Taikwando.
A total of 28 sports are waiting in line to fill in those open spots.
Billiard sports (Pool - Snooker - Carom) are one of those and also Golf is one of them.
Billiards sports have a good chance if all members (countries) would cooperate.
For example, last March the leading board(forgot the name for a minute) for all Billiard sports invited 157 countries to come to Las Vegas to talk about the importants of Billiard sports becoming Olympic.

Only 6 showed up !!!!!!!

This because in 2006 the leading board has to hand over all the info they have about Billiardsports, like TV hours, members in each country, etc. to the Olympic Comite.
So they can decide wich sports may enter the Olympics.
After 2012 it is almost 100% not possible to enter the Olympics ever again.

I believe that they again in 2005 trying to invite all countries to come and talk about this issue.
I think that people do not understand how important it is to get Billiards Sports Olympic.
Believe me, it will be booming business after they become Olympic, not only for players, but fore Room operators, Retailers and of course Billiard Boards for each country, who all be better of.

Why is the game of 9-ball put down so often in determining who the better player is? 9-ball is the game of our generation whether some like it or not. what I know is 9-ball and the game is about offense and that's what people like. ?

RD,
Speaking as one who often criticizes 9-ball and all rotation games (yes, I'm a straight pool geek from way back), I also think they would end up playing 9-ball in the Olympics (quicker games, more manageable competition for large numbers of players).

I think 9-ball is "put down so often" because there is way too much luck involved. Sinking the 9 on the break is luck, missing a ball and snookering your opponent is luck, missing the shot and lucking it into a different pocket is luck, not making a ball on the break and leaving your opponent no shot is luck. Maybe if, as Grady has said many times, you take some of this type of luck out of 9-ball, it would be criticized less. Yes skill plays a big part, but for 2 players even somewhat close in skill, short race 9-ball is equivalent to flipping a coin. In straight pool to a 1000 you will never beat someone better than you. In 9-ball I win quite a few games from champions I am no where near as good as.

If short race, Texas Express type 9-ball ever makes it to the Olympics then surely paper/rock/scissors must be included too.

P.S.- I never played a pool game (including 9-ball) that I didn't love playing.

If 9-ball is to be apart of the olympics then the one foul ball in hand has to be eliminated. They (as well as other tournaments) should go back to "rolling out or push out" after every shot like it was played about 25 years ago. This would eliminate alot of hemming and hawing about safties and accidential missed shots where the cue ball gets stuck behind a ball or the object ball gets tied up with other balls. And if I understand the rules correctly, if a player pushes out and the incomming player makes the first player shoot and that player misses pocketing that ball, then the incomming player, gets ball in hand. This would speed up the game. Is this a good thing?

If cuesports were to be inducted to the Olympics, I think there would be 3 main sports: 9-ball, 3-cushion billiards and snooker. All these games include a great number of people playing all over the world and they all would draw their "own" kind of knowledgeable audience. They might even add an all-round title for all these 3 games like in gymnastics...

Sorry Y'all; as much as I think pool is a sport, I cannot really see it in the Olympics.

When I think of Olympics, I think of athletes. I don't think table tennis or bowling belongs there either. I think those types of game/sports should have their own unique type of forum. Include Curling, Shuffleboard, Bocci Ball or whatever.

It sort of tickles me to think of what "school figures" would be associated with billiards in the Olympics also. OR--- I can just hear the lame commentators now:>>>....(gasp!!!).."and so Mr. Joe Cool from NYC will get a 2 point reduction because he failed to have at least 2 fingers on the table while trying to execute that last shot jacked up over the seven ball; perhaps he should have elected to use the bridge."...." But maybe the bridge wasn't an option since (of course), there are rules about how much distance allowance for use of the bridge; that could have been a larger point reduction or (HORRORS!!!!!) disqualification".......<<<<

I do think Skateboarding should be an Olympic sport. Like snowboarding now is.

Just my opinion.
