Cue Tip Protector

Hi all,

Would like to check with you guys what cue tip protectors are you currently using to protect your case from bluing?

And also for those using automotive vacuum caps as their cue tip protector, I know for 12.5mm - 12.75mm cue tip size, you're able to use 1/2 diameter ones to get a snug fit. Would like to check, how about 13mm ones? Which vacuum cap size do you guys use?

Thanks in advance

Uh...none?

Don't put em in dirty.

I don't really like the idea of wiping away the chalk on floor mat everytime I finish playing. It would be great if people were to share what type of cue tip protectors they're using.

And to me, even if you wipe away the chalk on the floor mat, there would still be abit of chalk left on the tip. Placing cue tip upwards in case doesn't really help for me either.

I use a microfiber cloth that I keep in my case to wipe chalk off of my cue tips before putting them into my case. If the microfiber doesn't take it off, I have confidence it's not coming off on the case interior.

I imagine though, if you feel you must use a cover or cap, that a 1/2 inch thin-wall vacuum cap would accommodate a 13 mm tip just fine. 13mm= ~.512 inches

Whether you "like it" or not, you're going to have to find a way to wipe those cue tips.

That's the reason for the clip-on billiards towels you see being sold, e.g.:

Just clip a towel to your case -- e.g. the zipper tabs or around the handle or strap rings. You'll have it with you at all times, and it's pretty convenient to get in the habit of wiping your cues' tips before putting them in the case.

If you're absolutely, no-questions-asked, dead-set on getting a set of "cue tip protectors," then Nancy Cote's Cue-Z tip cozies might be just the ticket:

Hope this is helpful!

Do you have a picture of the vacuum cap? Is is the same as mine?

No that's cool. I've just never considered or even seen anyone ever put cap on a cue tip before.

As for the chalk dust on the floor, that's where they sweep all the chalk dust off the tables everywhere I've ever played so harm there.

I probably have a thick layer of chalk on the bottom of my case...
When I pull out my cue they are pre-chalked and ready to go!

I get what you mean. In the place I play in, can say only me and another guy uses cue tip protectors. Am wondering whether silicone vacuum caps from the automotive side would fit. The down side is I'm unable to try.

I use selfmade caps (made from silicone pipe an a PVC cap) for protecting my case from blueing, cost me only 2-3$. I steal that idea form Ralf Souquet what's in case video.
Works great for me for almost 3 years, my case has no blue marks.

If you don't mind, could you show a picture of it?

I would not wipe my tip off on the carpet a my home more would I at the pool room, I'm respectful. A friend ordered a few cue towels from seyberts- sweet price-
I have now owned this one for awhile, I wipe the chalk off on one side and wipe my hands with the other side.
I've hand washed it a few times and it still feels new.
What don't come off on the towel won't come off on the interior of your case, the dye in chalk dyes the leather, so you basically have a stained tip. Hard tip/jump tips wipe clean real well.

The tip protector sounds like a good idea bit I'd be afraid of it coming off in a snug interior like a ultra pad JB case.
If you have a loose fitting interior on your cue case I don't see anything wrong with it if you don't want to go the towel route.

Your implication that some of us are disrespectful is insulting and I don't see where anyone choose to personally insult you for your choices.

As I stated, it's common practice at every pool hall I play at for the employees to sweep chalk dust from the tables onto the floor to be vacuumed up later. Wiping off your tip in that exact seem manner and location is not at all disrespectful or even frowned upon by anyone I know in the business and I'm friends with everyone responsible for that job at every room I play in.

Please don't make false judgements against people you know absolutely nothing about.

Thanks.

Now they tell me!

We're supposed to wipe the chalk off?

I'm relatively new to the game and learned 99% of what I know right here on AZB. But this is the first I've heard of wiping the chalk off the tip before putting the shaft in the case.

No wonder I can't make a table-length cut shot. I'll start wiping today!

I made them from silicone pipe and a PVC cap, that I insert in that pipe. The length of the protectors is 7 cm. Shaft snug in the pipe pretty well, if shaft diameter is bigger I just have to cut some silicone from the inside of that pipe.
I use that type of protectors for all my 3 shafts, for 2 main reasons:
1) They protect my case from blue chalk.
2) They keep my shafts higher in the case, so I can extract the shafts faster.
Yes, they are not too fancy, but do their job well.

Here you can see the difference where the shaft is with tip protectors, and without.

PS Sorry for the picture quality.

Thanks for the pictures. They seem to do their job well enough. I would like something that is maybe just 4cm max. Any longer, I doubt I'm able to close my case. :D

I have never wiped the chalk off of the tip as I don't care how much is down in the bottom of the case.. I'll be brushing more chalk on the tip the second I take it out of the case anyway.

Seems like a futile endeavor to me,

Try the hardware store. They have these end caps of various sizes and colors. I forget what they are called, but they are for capping off the end of tubing and rods.

I went down this path before myself after seeing that Ralf Souquet video. I just ended up wiping the chalk off with a napkin at the end of the night. I didn't like the tight fit of the end cap rubbing the chalk dust into my ferrule.
