Cue wood or fire wood?

How do you know the different between wood to use for cues and fire wood

The two main criteria are type and cut, with proper aging along the way. Various sections of the trunk are more desirable than others, with resulting grain patterns and burls adding to the final value. If you have a nice wood, do some research into the proper milling of it for cues.
 
The difference is effort required to make it usable. I found some amazing wood at the bottom of the fire wood pile last winter. It was treated to prevent cracking, dried, and it is going to be stabilized in a week or so. It is spalted, curly, crotch cut oak. You don't find it everywhere. It was too pretty to burn.
