Cueball speed: the Final Frontier

I anticipate you're correct about the BreakSpeed app, but it's not crucial to success. Like CJ said, it's more about getting the "feel" than the number.

Really it's about understanding everything that affects how far the cue ball goes. I can often attain the same final CB location while hitting the CB a half dozen different 'speeds'.

Speed is easy. It's not at all difficult to hit the CB at the speed you want. You can learn to to hit a good lag in like 2 minutes.

A couple of observations:

1) Choosing the right position route takes a lot of the pressure off of your cue ball speed. The best players can play pinpoint position if they need to, but they also choose patterns that mean they seldom need to. This is why they win in the long run.

2) Practicing position play speed with a break speed app as you described it is a waste of time. You're describing hitting head spot to foot spot at various speeds. The problem is that position play is all about the speed, direction, and spin of the cue ball after it contacts the object ball. How full you hit the object ball directly affects how much speed remains on the cue ball. This variable is totally absent from your proposed practice routine.

Practice position play by playing position. For example, try Kim Davenport's Target Pool.
