Why would you suggest one way to a prospective client?

It's my understanding a short, uncapped ferrule has much less deflective properties, as the ferrule material is much more dense/heavier than shaft wood.

I only use a capped ferrule for Ivory ferrules. I believe that the bare wood at the end of the tenon transmits the vibration that we call feel. The caped ferrule of an Ivory ferrule, I feel is nessasary because of the fragil nature of Ivory. I prefer to play with Ivory...JER
 
i was an only capped kinda guy. recently i did a few shortys uncapped and they play really nice.

i still wouldnt do ivory uncapped. as jb said above i like as much ivory as possible for protection
