i use 99% isopropyl to clean my shaft and it has been working great. i was wondering what is the best solution to use to clean this grim off my butt near the joint. its a DZ custom butt if that matters. is the isopropyl ok?? just wanted to make sure before i tried it.

That is true but only on the surface of the wood and not deep into it. Like if you dip your finger into rubbing alcohol it doesnt penetrate the skin. The alcohol will evaporate before it has a chance to penetrate deep. Especially if your using denatured alcohol.

The atmosphere will replenish the moisture of the wood in short time. Wood is porous especially in the shaft where it is exposed. The alcohol will dry only the wood surface unless you soak it into the wood.

Not sure how it effects glue used in laminated or radial shafts though.

Someone on this board turned me on to Mr Clean's Magic Eraser. It is truly unbeliveable when used followed by a piece of leather for burnishing. Try it -- you'll like it.
