Cues choosing dilemma... Need help on first cue

I've been a casual player, and recently decide to jump into billiard world. First things to notice when going to pool hall everyday is no straight house cue when the hall is half full. So I'll be buying cue recently.

I never play in league before (I think I'll join when I run the rack at least once)... When playing 9/10 balls I usually can run the last 3 balls. The max I could run is the last 5 balls and that's when the position of them are decent. I have some control over draw, stunt, and follow, but still in search of english. Friends hate me when I do safety shot because most of them time I could make the cue ball at a position tough for them to shoot. My breaking is ok. No Masse nor jumping at the moment (Know how to do them, did them before but no control at all). So I'm pretty much still at a beginner level.

I could spend about $600 with shipping to Canada (so most of the cases not free), and this is the budget for the next 3 years.

Problem is... should I 1) get a good playing cue and use house cue to break/jump, or 2) get a cheaper playing cue with a break/jump cue?

With option 1, I think I'll probably get cheaper Mezz+WD700 or cheaper Predator+314-2... With a 1x1 hard case with shipping and possible taxes it should be within $600 range. I tried Predator before, like it, but I heard WD700 got a better feel. I couldn't try it at the moment, so maybe at the end I'll get Predator.

With option 2, I could get Poison Bolt and Poison VX2.9, but then usually 2x2 + case are more expensive... or any good LDs with break and jump cues (would open up suggestions) I never tried any break/jump cue before.

Any thoughts?

Do you guys think it's too early for me to invest in Mezz/Predator and should go for LDs from lower-price-tag first before deciding on Mezz/Predator after 3 years?

Thanks for the help!

The Mezz cues are great value for money. Get one that`s not too expensive, play and get to know the cue and if you decide you wan`t a more advanced low deflection shaft, OB, Predator, Mezz and SS360 shafts are all available for mezz united joint.
If you choose a Mezz with wavy joint it`s going to be a softer hit and since the joint is proprietary to Mezz i only know that shafts from Mezz, OB and Predator will fit.

... mezz united joint.
If you choose a Mezz with wavy joint ...

Just by curiosity, will Mezz terminate united joint line in the future with the introduction of wavy joint? I think I should be able to accustom to firmer hit or softer hit so I'll leave this decision of personal preference 3 years later.

Thing is... I'm never own a cue, so I don't know if shaft on a good playing cue will be easy to get out of shape (i.e. not straight) easily... How's the support with new shaft on older/previous generation of pin/joint in this industry?

I have hit with Predator Ikon with 314-2 shaft, mezz with wd700 shaft and OB with classic shaft, personally I prefer mezz and OB, as for my personal preference predator's hit is kinda hollow. If feedback is your priority I think you can't go wrong with mezz or OB. Good luck buddy!

No Mezz has used both joints for quite some time now.
If you choose wavy or united joint depends on what you like.
Most people who choose Mezz like a firm hitting cue, so atleast for me it felt most natural with the united joint, similar feel to Schon or Joss.
The cue will stay straight if you take care of it and store it properly.
I have had quite a few cues and never had one warp on me, main reason is that i never leave my cue up against the wall, like you see some players do.

ive been playing a long time, and have tried a lot of different cues. I always end up back with a schon cue (its closest to what I like, that I have been able to find). Schons all seem to hit about the same, and the hit is pretty good :) Its probably a little more than you are looking to spend, but its a cue that will last you a long time. The shaft im using on the schon I play with, is the original shaft that I got with it, about 8 or 9 years ago... still straight, still hits good.....(and I break with it also).

As for the the LD shafts, you'd have to talk to one of the younger guys about those...ive tried them, but prefer to stick with what I know ;)

Good luck on your cue search.

I was in same position. After tons of online research I had my heart set on an ob classic. Went to a billiards store and tried everything they had including ob and predator. I ended up with a poison bolt 04. Out of everything I tried it just felt best to me somehow. So for me the poison felt best and my game has improved so I have no complaints. Cues are subjective so try everything you possibly can before you decide.
