cues that are allowed for APA/TAP 8 and 9 ball leagues

I am asking the following question:

Is there a rule pertaining to what type of cue can be used for APA/TAP league play for both 8 & 9 Ball ?

The reason I inquire about this is because there are several players in the league that use a SNOOKER Cue for both the 8 & 9 ball league.

The pool room in which we play league has a Snooker table with all of the RED, Black, BROWN, balls, etc. The Snooker balls are smaller than a handball but bigger than a golf ball. If you play on the SNOOKER table you are only allowed to use a SNOOKER cue and not a regular pool cue.

So, I would think that the same rule applies to the standard 4.5 X 9.0 pooltable designed for 8 & 9 ball. You should only be allowed to use a pool cue and not a SNOOKER cue on these tables as well.

It appears that when they use a Snooker cue on a regular size cue ball designed for 8 & 9 ball that they seem to get an extreme amount of spin, I think this is because of the very small diameter of the tip. It is almost like using a cruise missle to play darts, you can hit the bullseye everytime.

SO, can someone tell me if in fact it is permissable to use a Snooker cue for 8 & 9 Ball league ?

Thanks for any information.

the wpa has rules on what a legal cue is....snooker cues meet that standard, so you can play pool with it. conversely, there is no rule that says playing snooker with a pool cue is not allowed. i don't see what the fuss is about using what cue for what game, a cue is just a stick of wood that hits a ball. it would be difficult, maybe impossible, to come up with clear definitions of what would constitute a snooker cue and what would be a pool cue and clearly distinguish between them. people can use what they want, as long as it doesn't damage anything. the cues are optimized for a particular game, and i think it's generally a disadvantage to use say a snooker cue for nine ball. even the snooker players like tony drago and steve davis all eventually converted over to a pool cue for nine ball.

Hi BROOKLYN

Both the APA & TAP Leagues allow Snooker Cues. That's also true in the BCA & VNEA Leagues.

They maybe achieving a high amount of spin but the snooker cue tip may not be the reason WHY. No matter what size (14-13-12-11-10-9) tip is used, the maximum surface amount of tip that touches the cue ball is the same on all shots. That amount is right around 2.5mm.

Hope I helped,
