hi everyone...just bought an atlas lathe...18" between centers ....has anyone ever made a basic butt end with with no points with one of these before...how did you fair out...have all the measuring tools...mics...verniers...dial...gauges...just wanna know if a cheap cue is possible
 
You could build a butt that is two pieces of wood and turn both completely to size and then joint them together. You probably would have to buy your shaft blank already turned to final sanding size.

What size hole do you have throgh the spindle? You will want at least 1 3/8" for joint work.

Don't let the small spindle bore scare you away. You can make a steady rest with bearing and insert collets to do your joint work through. I built cues for 7 years without a large spindle bore.

Chris, I wouldn't be oposed to a good steady rest. I think it would be tricky to do this kind of work with a steady rest and only 18" between centers without a good size through hole. On the other hand it would be a good tip or joint machine if the through hole where big enough.

He plans to build his butts in two halves turned completely to size before assembling, so even though it will be a pain it should work. If his spindle bore is large enough to run half the shaft back through he will be able to do joint work. And the best part is once the cue building bug as bit him hard enough and he gets tired of working with that short lathe, I might get to sell him a Cue Lathe or parts to convert a big metal lathe. :wink:

Good point Chris. You are a great source for lathes and parts. I would still suggest that he at least buys your book.
