Be sure your corewood is straight, dry, and straight-grained.
I still have a couple hundred ft of bloodwood left over from millwork jobs in DC. It is brash, & not a terribly stable material. That is, there are stable pieces, but the ones that aren't never will be. Love it as a material, though. Often use if for drawer slides, and even for window slides. Besides working well for slides, it leaves a nice smell in drawers.
