Current opinions of an old Gold Crown vs Fiamond

Looked at a gc 1 today. I love them. Diamond are great too. I've heard of issues on the Diamonds that the company won't fix. Some say diamonds use modern materials like particle board. Is that bad?

Current opinions of an old Gold Crown vs Diamond...

Both great. If you find either one in good condition...that's your table

Both tables are very well made. GC1 will be beat to hell because it's 60 years old, unless you found a needle in a haystack and it was never in a pool room. Diamond should be in much better shape, simply due to its age.

The main difference will come down to the playability. The cushions on the Diamond bounce more than a GC. That's up to you which you prefer.

The other notable thing, if the CC1 does need new cushions, they are no longer available. The ones available today require the wood rail bevel that the cushion attaches to to be modified. Several mechanics do this modification. On the flip side of that, if the cushions are still the original Monarch cushions, they will probably last another 50 years, and you won't have to worry about it.

The diamonds don't use particle board. They use solid wood for rails and the Pro-Am uses a thick marine grade type plywood for the box.

Every time I see the old Monarchs off of my GCI I always wonder why I changed perfectly good cushions, then I remember I had to if I wanted 4 1/2" pockets.

Did the 4.5" pockets make you a better player, or just frustrate you? Asking for a friend!
Neither, I do think they help mentally though, I was always intimidated by pro cut Diamonds before they were the norm, I think going to a 4 1/2" pocket gave me confidence. I also believe you should practice on what you play on even though the vast majority of tournaments I play in are on barboxes and the home table I practice on is a 9 footer. But then that goes back to confidence, if an opponent thinks they are going to leave me a tough shot on a barbox with distance they are sadly mistaken, when you are used to 9 foot tables there is no long shot on a barbox. The difference in table size is a strange thing too. Before I had my 9' table when I played on one they seemed huge, then when I got used to my 9' table barboxes seemed small if I went a week without playing on one, now they might as well be the same size, I don't really notice a size difference anymore.

Style and looks. I love how it just sits on those legs like a pedestal with its thin profile. It plays good enough too.

Lets see. GC1-3, the score counters can or will scratch the cue butt. The rubber pockets will leave black runner streaks on your shaft. The rails will need work if you replace the cushions.

Diamond Red label, rails need to be modified to blue specs or a new blue top.

Diamond Blue label, plays great, similar to a GC4. Leaves black marks on the balls from the leather pockets. Most leagues and tournaments are now on Diamond tables.

Your opinion may vary.

I don’t know how you can laud a GC when it is sitting beside an Anniversary and you seem to be unaware that a Diamond Is a GC with the bugs missing…..you ever notice how much nicer it is to make a bridge on a Diamond even around a pocket?

I will like to add the Diamond rubber on the pockets can streak the shafts too. It's happened to me before.

Naw. Anniversary looks too bulky and clumsy looking.

I prefer the sleek look. It's floating.

I play sometimes on my son's Anniversary. I started playing pool on GC1s in the later 1960s. I have played on Diamonds- Red and Blue- I will take the vintage Brunswick all day long - and just the way they came out of the factory - I just think that those Brunswick's epitomized pool as it was meant to be played by the masses from casual to serious. I don't pretend to be the player that I am not and my life revolved around work, family, and enjoyable recreation, pool included.

I hate ball returns. Bend down and get them just to bend and rack them.

It's much more easier to fetch the ball even if you have to walk around the table and the opponent helps too.
