I was just wondering if there is anything that forbids one custom cue maker from copying the design of another cue maker's cue?

it's done all the time. usually because the customer likes a design but not the price of the original.

:p :p Do not personally think there is much to be done NEW in Cue Design. Design Theft is a Funny Subject, as in my Opinion. Imitation is the Highest form of Flattery.

How many Cuemakes are makingh SIX POINT Q’s. Think Bert Schrager was the First to ever make a Six Pointer, Bert is not Cry Foul to those other Cuemaker making Six Pointers. IMHO…..

well respect is the first thing that comes to mind

Just because people do it doesn't make it right. It all boils down to where you personally, and the cuemaker you're asking to do it, stand on the design theft issue. I had Skip Weston make me a 6-point SW/Kersenbroch style cue, although it is definitely recognizable as a Skip and not a SW. However, had I been exposed to this debate before purchasing I may have made a couple of changes to differentiate it a bit more.

The Southwest Style is being made by Coker, and Capone I know for Sure.

But they are not True Southwest Q's, just Southwest Styles.

I am surprised the Asian Counterfeiters have not Cloned the Southwest Cue, and started selling them on E-bay….

I have SW as a favorite search I get a bunch of notices in my email all the time for SW cues that are copies. I was reporting them as listing violations but since Ebay has a new format that allows you to see the item in your email I don't bother anymore.

I really like the 8-point high/low Szamboti style cues with bird's eye maple and ebony/ivory inlays, especially Bill Schick's, but from what I've heard, his plate is so full, it'd probably take years before I see a finished product. So, I have little choice but to go to another high quality cue-maker to commission my dream cue. I don't want a carbon copy of another cue in question -- I just want a similar look/style, combined with the cue maker's own personal touches for something familiar yet unique.
