Hi guys,

I am looking for the best custom cue for the money at the $500 price mark. I don't want to buy off ebay, as I want the shaft and butt to my spec. A plain players cue is all I am looking for. Who are the best at this price point?

Thanks! :)

As of a few months ago, you could get a basic 4-point cue from Andy Gilbert for right around that price.

Andy Gilbert, Jack Madden, Bella Serra, Harry Richards....

Fred <~~~ too many to count

The three I would recommend are Bryan Mordt of BCM cues, Bob Frey, or possibly Pat Diveney. Any of those can make you a fine hitting lower end cue that will serve you very well.

Jeff Olney

You can buy an incredible cue for $500 from Jeff Olney. That's who I would recommend in addition to the great cuemakers other people are listing here.

I'd go with a Sugartree cue from QBilder on easypooltutor. A lot of people from that forum are singing his praises, and he shares a lot of his knowledge. It is very clear that he uses the best materials and the best construction, techniques that a lot of makers won't employ.

Really depends on what "youre specs might be " and "what you expect the cue to play like" ?????????? Depending on these variables i could recomend some very dirrerent cuemakers.........:D

Depending ...

on where you are at? Bob Owen of Shurtz cues can make you a very nice cue for that. He is easy to work with, and you will get a lot of cue for the money with Bob (Gabe Owen's dad). He is located here in Wichita, and the phone is (316) 269-3844, or just go to:

We will be debuting our new line of playing cues in about three months. I am trying to get them ready for Valley Forge; if I can't meet the deadline, they will be debut in the BCA.

They will feature a very special shaft with low deflection and very little vibration, hand spliced, with our own special joint.

We have not decided on the pricing yet since the cues are not officially ready. I will try to build a basic line around $500. My objective is to offer customers a cue with very little deflection and vibration, with a very well constructed butt section for the best balance and performance.

If you have the time, please drop by in VF or BCA and I can tell you more about this.

Low deflection or low squirt?

You are right, it should be low squirt. I use the term low deflection because I figured it would be easier for everyone to relate to, but you are right, it is low squirt, I stand corrected.
I think less vibration is also very important. When you have a shaft with less vibration, you will feel that your shaft and even your cue is more solid. Traditionally, this is achieved by having a thicker taper. A thicker taper sometimes compromises the amount of english you can impart on the cue ball, and also may feel a bit less "lively."
The challenge lies in how to creat a shaft with a nice pro taper which does not feel whippy or too soft, which allows the player to move the cue ball around with ease, without experiencing a lack of solidity.
