Cut Off Tool / Parting Tool

AGAIN, please excuse such a basic, elementary question but due to my lack of experience and being in a completely different field of work my whole life, I'm not sure on the best places to buy tooling for my lathe. I have been buying my tools from either Chris or Todd for my lathe and recently last week found a place locally that gave me tons of carbide tooling but only AL, AR, and C's, no cut off tools of any kind.

Is the only cut off tool or parting tool for my 1/4" tool post, the one I have a pic of below (I know that is not a 1/4" tool, but the pic is the same) ??? I am wanting a parting tool that doesn't waste so much material when cutting, seems the tool I posted a pic of waste alot of excess material when cutting.

Is there anything "thin" that will mount in the small 1/4" tool post that will part but yet is thin and won't waste as much material ?? I can find them for 3/8" tool posts but not 1/4".

Sorry AGAIN for such a basic, elementary question. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks cutter. I saw those but I already have a set of indexable cutters, they just don't have the cut off tool or holder. I was TRYING to find JUST the tool holder rather buying another whole kit of indexable cutters but I may have to resort to that if I can't find JUST the holder itself for 1/4" tool post.

And I tried Google, seems I came up with the same results that you did....

Don't know if you can buy them seperate, but these cut off holder usual have inserts that get down to atlest .078 width

Google is your friend!

Sorry to jump in. Cutter have you used that set on ebay? They decent? Thats about what I have been looking for.
Thanks

Parting Tool

You can take that cutter in the picture and have it ground thinner. Mine are about .035.

I don't know what you are parting off or the diameter, but you can grind your own tool bit. A cobalt tool bit would be my suggestion. Just don't get it too hot when you grind it and expect it to take a while.

Or, go to----

poolguy and SpiderWeb......... That is where my inexperience comes in. I KNOW it can be done but have zero experience in tool making, never even seen anybody do it, much less done it myself. With a little more hands on experience I will try it but for right now I'm gonna save my eyes and fingers and not try and make my own tools. I use to be a safety coordinator at a sawmill so I am overly cautious and just not ready to try it myself.

poolguy....... thank you for the link, very much appreciated.

PM replied to and payment sent.

You are more than welcome to make the announcement, I can tell by the last thread there are plenty waiting for one.

PM sent.
BTW, my solid carbide saw is .020" thick.

Since this is your thread that we are currently in, I'll humbly ask your permission to announce that
I have saws & mandrels back in stock for those that missed-out in the last go-round.

No, I'm a big fan of iscar, but don't think they make 1/4 inch tools.
I'm lucky enough to have a BDB1340 jet to work on. I'd bet those will work, it really depends on the quality of the insert, as long as the holder can hang on to the insert, it will work ok. I just put those up as an example.

I can make 3/8" tool posts to fit your lathe for $25 if your lathe uses the normal 1/4" tool posts like my other lathes have.

I use the cobolt hss .040 inch part off blade in a holder. The blade is like that of Shirline cut off blade part number 3086
Mine is the Myford equivalent in a Dickson holder (Italian style) I keep the blade length from the body no more than 13mm.
If I need to part off larger diameter work that requires more than a 12mm radius to the inner, I use a wider blade. I have holders for 1/16 inch and 1/8 inch wide. But I rarely use the other blades compared to the .040

Yes, my lathe uses the 1/4" tool post like the rest of your lathes. I do have one tool post from you that you made 3/8" so I could mount your tip shaping tool in it.

Thanks conetip.

You might check with http://www.littlemachineshop.com/ . They've got some thin parting blades and holders. The guys at LMS are really nice to deal with, very flexible and willing to answer any dumb questions I've come up with. :)

Thanks Jim.
