i walked into a local pool hall the other day and shot with one of my cues until the tip broke. i tried fixing it but it kept popping off every other shot. i need another cue. i went in the billiards store upstairs of the pool hall to buy another cue but it was too expensive. does anyone have any recommendations as to where i should buy a cue in dallas area? im looking around the ~$40 range. thanks.

You could of course get the tip replaced pretty easily and cheaply, but from what I'm hearing your cue isn't very good to begin with... You probably want to spend a little more than $40 to replace it though. At least a hundred dollars more in fact.

What are you looking for in a new cue?

i was thinking something like a shawn stl17. i like how they hit. i tried to hit with a steve klein but in my experience (maybe i got one of the bad ones) it hits like a house cue. i also like how meucci black dots hit; they are very stiff. i like stiff shafts. any cue advice?
 
Try one of the pawn shops on Jefferson. :D
I'm from O.C. too, and I've come across a few good cues down on Jefferson. I've actually seen a Schon at the one on loop 12 and Grauwyler.

I'm guessing you were shooting at hawley's..It's unfortunate I wasn't there today to shoot with another AZB'er.

If you like the way a Schon hits, I think Joss also hits very similar and for the price can't be beat. For $40, go talk to Scooter in the Hawley's Billiards store and grab a players sneaky pete. He will usually cut 5-10% off if you haggle or point out a slight imperfection.

$40.00 cue?

Well, unless you have very limited funds, (which i can understand) why would you want to play with a cue that cost only $40.00? There are foreign cues from Korea for example that cost under $40.00. In Dallas pool halls, sometimes the best deals are to buy from individuals but again, the people I know who trade, buy and sell cues, dont put much stock in a cue in this price range.

I'd pay $40 for a Schon, too :)

Seriously, though, Dufferin used to offer a decent two-piece cue in that price range, but I'm not sure if they're around anymore. Most everything you find in that price range will probably hit worse than the average house cue, because one-piece cues generally hit better than two-piece cues, but I imagine there are some ok cues in that price range. Maybe look in a sporting goods store or something. Best bet, though, would be to put that $40 in action, try to turn it into $200-$300 and then buy a low-end production cue. Better yet, take the $200-$300 and buy a sneaky pete from a reputable custom cuemaker. ;)
