Has anyone heard what Dan Louie is up to lately? He's such a fine player from the Seattle area. I wonder if he's retired from tournament and/or back room action?

I may be wrong here. I think he got his dad's chinese resturant in seattle and is very busy working. He still plays in some local tournament in WA and he goes to reno when he has the time.

Still in action, Doc.

He is in the restraunt business but does show up for tournaments on occasion.

The proof. Still looks 30 years old too. Photo courtesy, Lunchmoney.

All correct, above; he does indeed own a (terrific) Chinese restaurant in West Seattle and still plays tournaments in the area (and stuff like Reno sometimes, too). He's a great player and an extremely nice person to boot.

I just got back from BCA 8ball Regionals in Lincoln City, OR. Geiler was down there in full form...suit and hat. He's a fantastic player. He came up short in the Masters singles...finishing towards the top of the field. Pat Schumacher won the Masters singles.

I heard Geiler is going to be playing in a mixed scotch doubles tourney in Everett at Shotze's this coming weekend. He is partnering with a pretty asian girl names Patty Chen that I went to UW with. She shoots pretty well.

As far as Dan Louie goes, I hear he is also playing in the mixed scotch doubles tourney at Shotze's this weekend with my ex-girlfriend Tiffany Taylor from Jillians-Seattle. That is going to be a very tough team to beat since Tiffany shoots very well.

Jillians is going to be having a bigger tourney coming up April 16/17 and all of the big players will be there. Tiffany will be running it and said that she is going to have probably a 96 player field with around a $40/entry. Should bring out the big guns. I'll be taking my shot at them as well.

I have know Rich for years. He came up to the hall I play at in Mount Vernon a couple of weeks ago and in a matter of minutes he was entertaining us on the pool table. Have you ever seen his famous "kick shot"?

Yes, the kick shot is hilarious!!! Incidentally, my husband and I are playing the scotch doubles tournament in Everett this weekend, too!!! :) (I hope we're going to be tough to beat....) This will be the first time we've been able to shoot together since the kids were born, so at the very least we plan on having a blast!!! Plus it'll be nice to see everybody again 'cause we don't get out much. LOL!!

Good luck this weekend. I may have to hop in the truck and make the 30 minute drive down there to sweat a few matches. If so, I'll make sure to say hello.

Good luck this weekend! I was going to head up there with a local Vancouver player but we decided not to. Kinda glad cause thats a long way to drive to get our @$$' handed to us. HEHE. Kinda just want to relax this weekend. Still recovering from the 12 hours/day of pool for the past 5 days. Haven't done that since college. LOL.

This post has dragged up some old memories for me, back in the early 80's I was playing nothing but pool in the Portland /Seattle area. Dan Louie and Stuttering + Panama+ the Hat Rich G were seed #'s one and two at every event. Back then the events were few and fair between but Dan Louie, at the time, may have been the best barbox player in the country ( with the big rock he WAS the best). Dan had Rich's number in both 9ball&8ball back then. Over a period of three years I saw Dan & Rich in the finals probably ten times. It was hard to get anybody to bet against Dan so when the two were matched in the finals I would just give up odds on the money until the bet was to good to refuse. I never lost a bet riding on Dan. Rich had action in 9ball but nobody had action against Dan in barbox 8-ball, he played soooooo deliberate it was painful. To this day I have never seen anybody play the 'complete' style of 8ball that Dan played. By complete style I mean he would take the time during his run to completely #$%# up the other set of balls even though he knew he was going to cleanly run his set of balls out; I think he called it 'buying insurance'. The guy was brutal...
Another good player from that time frame, David Rhodes, was sitting with me while the TD was drawing the matches for a big 8ball event being played at the Hunt&Fish in Beaverton, Oregon. Dough Boy David drew Dan right out of the gate. He turned to me and said "if I win the flip I'll try and run the set(back then they still played winner breaks) but if I lose the flip I'm forfieting the match just to save my brain cells for the rest of the tournament. Dave did win the flip, broke and run two racks, came up dry, and lost the race to six 6-2. During Dan's two hours to run six straight racks Dave matched up with a guy across the room for some $20 9ball and just told me to yell at him when he had to come over and rack the balls...it was funny.
Dan's very next match was a kid named Leo Newberry. Leo was a lefty who played very strong, he was not energy deprived you could say. Leo was nicknamed the "Lion" because he would stand at the break end of the table while you racked for him and roar at the top of his lungs...it was quit intimidating for sure...Leo was NUTS, but just a riot to watch play. I sat up in the lifeboat the Hunt&Fish had for seating and just laughed my a$$ off for the entire match...nothing could get too Dan and he dispatched Leo with no problem. All Dan needed in winner breaks barbox 8ball was a chance at the table and the outcome was set. I'm serious, I never saw Dan Louie lose a race in 8ball in three years and that must have been atleast ten events times six/seven matches per event, he never went to the left side...amazing
I see now that things have changed in the northwest and Dan & Rich no longer dominate the game but they sure did dominate in the early 80's..

This is one of the best story I read about pool players in a long time. I love it! Thank you. If only I could be there to see Dan rack and break and run rack after racks while his opponent played someone else for money. It is soooooofunny!

By the way, if you vote for me and I win, I may be able to come with Sarah to OR the end of the year to play you guys some. Please follow the link in my signature... :D Thnak you thank you thank you...

Thanks, guys!! Lunchmoney, I sure hope you stop by and say hello (I must have missed you at the Breaking Point last year). UWPoolGod1, it's not such a long way, only about an hour and a half. You should reconsider, sounds like there will be tons of great matches - besides, it'll be fun hanging out with all the champions that are going to be there!!! :)

No, you didn't miss me at the Breaking Point last year, I never showed. An all night one pocket session was the reason I missed it. I can remember talking about driving down that way while playing and when the game was over (7:00am) somehow it didn't seem like such a good idea anymore. I will make a sincere effort to show up. It will be fun to see everyone.

Just an add on to my last post about Dan Louie. It is the final match and Dan is on the hill, his opponent needs two games. Dan is lining up a three ball combo, the balls are all about a foot apart and it would be a hell of a shot to get out with. He keeps going to the third ball then back to the second ball then back to the first ball...he must have repeated this about five or six times. Once or twice he even got back to the cueball, stroke it about five times then would get up and do the whole line up again....finally, he is doing another line up procedure when he gets back to the first ball of the combo he just pulls the trigger and fires the combo in but it's a foul because he shot with one of his balls instead of the cueball...Dan doesn't understand whats going on when his opponent calls a foul. He was so deep into this shot he thought he had shot with the cb and he wouldn't believe it was a foul. I'm telling you he thought the 40/50 sweaters watching were in a conspiracy against him when everybody is laughing and yelling at him what had happened.
He ended up winning anyway but he wasn't convinced he had done such a bonehead thing, he couldn't remember doing it and didn't believe he had.

Cheesemouse, is David Rhodes still playing? He was a great player, but it seems to me he got into some problems in the late 1990's. I watched him in a tournament match with Annigoni. Rhodes won 9-0. When Rhodes started to shoot the 7 ball in the last rack, Tony said, "That's alright David..." He was playing flawless pool that day.
