Hey there guys. I went to the Derby yesterday and was sweating the Brumback/Appleton onepocket match alongside Maryland player Shaun Wilkie. We analyzed the match, shared some laughs and had a great time.
Since I learned that he was from what I thought was an area that had a more dynamic straight pool scene, I thought that I'd ask him about 14.1 up there. He told me that there are some active leagues up there, with some rather strong players. I asked him what his high run was, and he said that he just got it - a 199 - right around the new year. Awesome! He told me that his goal was to have at least one run of 100 per week, and that since he was at the Derby this week, he'd have to run two over 100 to make up for it next week - ha ha.
I just thought he was a real nice guy with a genuine enthusiasm for 14.1. Though we have NO straight pool scene in my area at all, it's nice to know that it lives on elsewhere. It's also fun to know that while I'm struggling to get into the fifth rack, some folks out there are working on getting into the 15th rack! What a fun and challenging game for anyone of any skill level.
