"Trapping or Wedging the Cue Ball
It is a foul if you deliberately trap or wedge the cue ball in the jaw of the pocket. In addition to the foul penalty, your opponent receives cue ball in hand behind the head string."

Anyone shed additional light on this one? It is new to me but I don't play a lot of tournaments. Used to speed up play? Is it a rule used commonly? Thank you in advance.

This is a one pocket rule.

Here's a scenario: You need all five balls and your opponent needs one ball. One object ball is in the jaws of a head pocket. You make a ball in your pocket and manage to make the hung ball and leave the cue ball hung in the corner pocket, so if you had a shot you could run out. You have no shot and no good safe. You shoot with a long, slow stroke towards the long-rail jaw of the corner pocket, and press the cue ball against the jaw with maybe five hits on the cue ball. This leaves your opponent corner hooked on all the balls on the table.

That would be an excellent play except it is explicitly forbidden by the "no trapping" rule.

If you can get the corner hook with a very soft tap and no double hit, then it is legal.

Thank You Bob Jewett!

How about this one? Isn't "Base of the ball easier to determine? Or no?

"The “base of the ball” rule does not apply. To be playable, object balls must be completely out of the kitchen. The edge of the ball may not touch or overlap the head string even if the base of the ball is completely outside the kitchen. The decision of the referee is final."
