Dead rail options

I guess this breaks down into a few questions:

1. What causes dead rails?
2. Are there different ways rails can be dead?
3. Can they be fixed?
4. How?

thanks,

dead rail (n): Goes thud. All balls bounce wide and lose a lot of speed.

1. Make sure the rails are tight to the table - if not the rails play dead.
2. If the rubber is hard they are probably dry-rotted and need replacement.
3. Cushions may have separated (become unglued) from the rail.
Check for movement of the cushions under the cloth.
You can try to reglue and see if this fixes the problem.

Is it just one rail or all six?

If it is all of them, I would assume that they are all either loose, or the rubber is shot.

If it is just one rail, the rubber may have come unglued or shifted.

it's 3 rails, the other three are quite fine. the table was just moved. the rails are consistently dead, not just in spots.
