Decided to play again...only differently!

Hi all! I just wanna take some time and wish you all a Merry Christmas, or whatever it may be that you celebrate. After some time off but playing very sporatically, I have made the conscious decision to come back into the game. I played for too long, and played well enough that it was most likely going to happen, I guess I was only fooling myself. Last night was the tournament here in town so I decided to play though I had to work today. I didn't leave the pool hall until almost midnight! OMG was it hard to wake this morning, but I had fun!! I ended up placing fourth in the tourney, even beating a few of my cities' better known players. All in all I did very well for as little as I have played so it made me believe I could still be a somebody around here. As far as my past antics of buying / selling cues are concerned, those days are behind me as I am unable to do it again, nor do I want to. I realize what I need to do to become a contender on the felt, and switching cues every week is not it! In my search for MY 'holy grail' it seems I spent way too much money on wrong thinking. I have a strong understanding of what works for me and don't have any intention of changing this time. I unfortunately upset a few folks during my search, and in order to make it right I will be contacting you soon to see if any resolution can be had. If not, fine...but it will not be because of a lack of effort on my part. I will be browsing all the forums here just to see whats going on, but may not involve myself in some of the discussions to stay outta trouble. lol Anyways, if you wanna chat, hit me up. I am back! :-)

hi!

Welcome back Jeff! What is it that you seek?

What would I like? Simple...I would like to just be. Anything that happened in the past I do not remember completely and it dont matter anyways, so Id like to start fresh and just be accepted. No BS, just another billairds fanatic trying to play and share experiences, etc. I will now be doing photography in the summers, pool during the winters, and still caring for my two boys full time. I live too busy a life to cause any drama or be given any. I just wanna socialize! Not too much to ask...Just make a new opinion of me now based on my current actions, not my past ones. Fair?

Jeff,

Sounds like you've learned the secret. There is no perfect cue. There is no holy grail. Simply find a cue that feels comfortable enough, and then put in tons of hours. Look at Shane Van B. with his old Cuetec....or Corey Deuel with that Jacoby he's had for like 10 years. Just buy a cue and stick with it....and even after taking a break, when you pick up your old cue, the weight and balance will still be familiar.

Good luck.

Matt

I find it interesting how so many folks naturally tend to think of a cue-maker first before asking about the type
of cue........I do that all the time. However, if a cue was made to my favorite personal specs, ex. cue weight, shafts,
joint, wrap, ferrules etc., then the dam cue should play lights out versus a cue from a great cue-maker that was heavier,
or had shafts too thin, or perhaps a piloted steel joint versus ivory which I prefer, etc.

It just seems to me that the specifications for a cue are a lot more meaningful, and therefore important, than the name
of the cue-maker. My Scruggs & Mottey cues were bought from the original owners and so I had to settle and accept
what the specs were. If it was possible, I'd tweak the specs for either cue just a little but I can't....that's not possible.
So I think getting what you want in a cue is more important than the name of cue- maker........assuming of course that
the quality of the workmanship was not an issue.

Jeff, welcome back.. Glad to see you decided to keep playing..

Enjoy yourself . And I hope you have a happy new year!

Chris

thanks

Thanks Chris, you were always someone here I considered a friend, and it continues to be a good consideration as far as I am concerned. Now, I did get this cue used and it may be a lil heavier than I used to like, BUT with that said, I am familiar with the builder and those cues so it was like picking up something I have had for a while. It has already helped me earn two fourth place finishes in tournaments. For not competitively playing for a while I am OK with fourth place. I will be selling or trading my 6 point ivory jointed / ferrules Paul Sumrall cue with two shafts, as I am satisfied using my sneaky pete. I found I prefer 5/16x14 piloted joints (like a Schon) compared to the big pin (3/8x10). I cannot use a wrapped cue very well, not even leather wrapped. I need a wood handle. I am unclear of the ferrules I like but it is not fibre or ivory. I just cant recall the name and will check later tonight. I used to use 19-19.5 but really think this one I have is closer to 20oz. I will update this later :-) Glad to be socializing again!
