Does anyone out there have a lathe setup for making ring billet. I was thinking of building a small lathe set up to mill ring billet and slice rings off with minimal waste, and I'm looking for ideas. Thanks for all advice. JIMM
This is a dedicated ring slot cutting machine. It is for that singular use only as I de-termed the ability for the lathe to spin by welding the spindle bore to the indexing jig. It has a custom fabricated vertical router mount to the cross slide.
This machine works perfect as I used it for 5 years before learning to run my CNC to produce billets. Very low hours of the Rigid router.

This Atlas Clausing Lathe was modified to be a fixed unit for making billets with 360 degree indexing. The machine is mounted to a 48" x 24" x 1.5" wooden plywood base.
It has a Rigid Router mounted vertically and cuts the slots at 90 degress on the X Axis. It uses a spring loaded spur drive center. It will make billets up to 1.320 in dia.
I welded the 360 degree 5C Collet Indexing Head to the spindle bore so it is a dedicated machine for slotting billets. I used this machine for 5 years and was very happy with it's performance making my billets.( see pics of rings on cues in the next post for an example )
I stopped using this machine when I got my CNC skills up to par and I now do my billets on the CNC. I need bench space for a new sander.
This machine is near Chicago and I am not interested in shipping it. Local pick up only.
