Ok, with all of the "controversy" surrounding the 14.1 World straight pool championship, I finally got an opportunity to speak to a few different officials at Dragon promotions. Here is some up to the minute information that is to be considered accurate.
Firstly with regards to Mike Zuglan. In september, after news broke of the impending straight pool tournament, a friend of Mike (you know who you are)contacted Dragon Promotions to find out if Mike Zuglan received an invite to the tournament. This man was told very clearly that Mike Zuglan definetly WAS on the invite list.
Question, why hasn't Mike Zuglan recieved his invitation yet?
Answer: Almost half of the players on the invite list have NOT received their invitaions yet because of two reasons.
Firstly, it is still a bit premature in that a specific venue hasn't even been contratcted yet (it will be soon though).
Secondly; the players that have recieved invites have mostly been current touring players that are in the mainstream with high visibility. Players on the list at tournaments were approached, told of their pending invitations, asked for their email addresses and invites were sent out. Just because someone at this point didn't recieve an invitaion DOES NOT MEAN THEY WON"T!!!
For all interested to know here are some various truths and facts:
*This is a WPA sanctioned event and will be recognized by the BCA and the history books as the World 14.1 Straight Pool Championships. (the one and only for 2006)
*There was no telling how successful this event would be so it was organized as a 64 man field, which I believe was the same as the US Open in 2000.
*To legitimize the title (World Championships) we had to invite quotas from a multitude of countries and continents. Thus only about 25 USA players could be invited.
*This is NOT a UPA event, although it is done in cooperation with UPA on ivitations of the top 10 players who are in essence todays modern era stars.
*The event will be in the NYC area, which is the heart of 14.1 in the US, and so some local heroes the fans would want to watch have been invited.
*There will be 7 qualifiers WORLD WIDE, including Germany, Holland, Canada, NYC, Philadelphia, Maryland, and .
*There are currently 40 players on an alternate list.
If you are interested in playing in this tournament please contact Dragon promotions to see if you are on the invite list. If not, there will be an announcement very soon with regards to specific dates and locations for the qualifiers.
The qualifier spaces are limited and will be filled on a first come first serve basis.
Good luck to all.
Hope to see you at the event.
