Deluxe Cuesmith Lathe Questions

Hello All,
Newbie with one of Chris's Dlx Cuesmith lathe, and have a few questions to those that have one. Hey maybe Chris himself can help. ;)

1) Has any one found a solution to a simple carriage stop?
The small headstock has a place for a rod to extend out and stop the carriage, but on the Dlx, it looks like Mr Hightower has made his own housing, that is square. When boring out a hole, this feature would really help.
Has any one made something?

2) Is there a tool post, that uses both slots on the crosslide, so that it does not torque or turn or rotate, when boring? The original uses one bolt and locknut, and I have a quickchange, that also uses one bolt. When boring hard woods, sometimes the tool post twists, and if not watching will take a little more out. I wish to bore some wood for handles, but am scared of current setup on a 9-12"hole. basically a core job. Any neat setups besides a gun drill that someonre can point me to?

Thanks for any info> (I will save my hair pulling till I get to finishes)

I have drilled a hole through the front plate on the deluxe to make a carriage stop that works like the old style smaller headstocks with the rod. I also have a small item that can slide up and down the bed and lock in as a carriage stop for $20. It is much like the bottom piece on the extra steady rest.
As far as the boring goes. Using a boring bar to go all the way through a forearm sounds more like a 1000 pound lathe job to me, but the Deluxe might do it. It does a lot of things some people don't think it will. Have you thought about using two tool posts lined up with each other holding the super long boring bar. I bore four inch holes with no problem using one, but as far out there as you are wanting to go I would say use two tool posts. One in each slot.

Thanks Chris
I'll call you on Monday, or send an Email to order the small bed clamp stop.
Also wanted a few other items from you, so now is a good time for an order

Hello,

Here are some pics of a carriage stop that works great on this lathe. I also have a picture of a boring bar holder that is easy to make that eliminates the twisting problem. You just get your center height and drill whatever size hole you need to accept your collet and boring bar.

Run your tool post up to where you want it to stop, mark it, drill a hole tap it & insert a screw. The tool post runs up to the screw, can't go any further & stops. Reguardless of what kind of stop you use, if it is in auto mode the motor will keep trying to go forward & you will break off one of the teeth...JER
