I know I am asking prematurely, but I am someone who likes to be prepared.

January will be my fist time attending Derby City, and I have some questions for all of you who have attended in the past.

Is the Executive West the best place to stay?
Is it the most economical place to stay?
What is the approximate room cost per night?
What perks are the players afforded (practice time etc.)

The Executive is a good place to stay in that, you dont have to worry about parking place. You can unwind before or after a match or can watch late night action. There were a few issues that occured last year however I talked to Greg Sullivan at the Open and he said that they have alot of the issues resolved this year hopefully.
Is it the most economical not really.Depending upon room size ranges from 70-100(if you get a suite) a night.I stayed there the first year, then the second year i stayed at the Sleep Inn down the street from freedom hall. The sleep inn is about 40ish a night. But this year I am going back to executive.I like the convience and have planned ahead for the additional cost.
Perks for players, most of the time the tables are taken up by matches or match ups.You MAY get a chance to hit a ball or two but dont expect significant time. There are a few local rooms but not too many with quaility equipment.

Joe,

I have been the past few years, and Yes, it is the best place to stay. We stayed at another hotel the first year and it was a pain in the ass going from one hotel to the other. For one thing, it's usually freezing outside, and getting out in the weather is tough. Plus, action goes on at the tournament 24/7, and you can just walk out of your room at the Executive at any hour of the day or night and sweat the 20 and 30 thousand dollar sets. It's hard to just get up at another hotel and do that. And you hear at the Executive when the big money games are going to be played, so you don't miss them being someplace else. Also, there is a restaraunt at the Executive, so eating a good meal is no problem.

The room rates do seem a little high, but the hassle is worth the extra. And, in my experience, the hotel has done a pretty good job to accomodate the players the years that I have been.

This is exactly the kind of info I'm looking for.
I'm leaning toward the EW, if only for viewing the action.
If $70 / night is a good estimate, I have no worries about that.

What about video cameras? (I'm such a geek)
Most players mind?
Taboo? or No?

Hi Joe,

I agree with staying at the Executive. The convenience of going down to the tournament room at 3 AM to watch some action is awesome. This year, there will be no teen age religious gathering concurrent with the DCC. One word of warning. Drive if you can. The food is questionable at the restaurant. They have "dawgs and burgers" near the main playing area. Fresh condiments and friendly help. If you find a table not in use during an event, practice is OK. Check with Scott Smith first. After the last match around midnight, the tables are locked and I believe its ten dollars per hour to play. Perhaps someone can correct me if I'm wrong. They use "coin" operated Diamond Smart Tables. There are an additional six full size and four bar box tables in a separate room for "practice". Yeah right. If bar boxes are your thing, there are nightly mini tournaments both eight and nine ball with auctions upstairs. Hope to see you there!

I have tried the Exec West and i have tried alternatives. Im going with the alternatives but only because i am a light sleeper

One of the disadvantages of the EW is that it any time day or nite, you will have people returning to their rooms or leaving their rooms. They are not quiet about it! Last year i lasted one sleepless nite.

You can book elsewhere and rent a car for the same total price as the EW plus you wont have to eat the same food day after day and just get a break from that place.

Just wanted to give another view on this for anyone in my situation. Id pay 10K to be able to sleep soundly.

On the other hand, maybe not-Twice in my life i have been the only one to wake-up in the middle of the nite with the house/furniture on fire, and we were able to put them both out without too much damage. Would you believe my brother and I threw a burning couch out a window?

I made reservations at Executive West a few days ago, I have only been once but I like the convenience of staying on site with all the 24/7 action. I had a rental car and was glad I did. It is nice to get around town or to go to the Casino which is a few miles away. I’ll be there for the one pocket in January even though my life expectancy in that tournament is about that of a fruit fly it is a really cool tournament and makes for an interesting stay.

Let's see. Personally i have never stayed at the EW. I never really enjoyed spending money when traveling to a pool tournament. I was more concerned with cutting costs, and making more profit.

ALSO..., people don't realize that if your staying at the hotel, you end up spending a lot on food.

I hate having to eat out every breakfast lunch and dinner.

So i stayed at the Extended Stay America. (dutchman) It was located about 10 minutes from the EW. It was one of those places with a small kitchen.
It suited me perfect. I just went into the shopping center across the street. Filled my fridge with appropriate food, and ate like a king.
Doesn't hurt that i love to cook.
Between me and my road partner, we probably spent next to nothing to eat.
AND, we had a cooler that we filled with soda and sandwiches that we stuck in the car in case we had one of those ALL DAY type situations come up, and we'd just go grab a bite to eat without having to fly back and forth between the EW and the hotel we were at.
It really did save us a ton of cash.

Drawback would be,
At the EW, they had the draw wired into the hotel tv system, and all you had to do was flip to channel 13 (??) and the draw would be flashing by on the screen with times and matches, as well as the results.
Where if you stayed outside the EW. If they were doing the draw that morning, you'd have to get up early, eat, clean up, and drive on over even if you didn't have a match till the afternoon. So i had to be there at at 10, even if i didn't have to play till 3.
If you were at the hotel...you could basically get up...look at the draw, and just roll out of bed.

If your looking for convenience, being there at the EW is just easy. Expensive, but easy.
For those more frugally minded.
The E.S. America is the way to go.

It also didn't hurt that there is a branch of my gym a block away from the place i stayed at. So i just flashed them my id. Told them i was from out of town here for a tournament, and i had full access to workout facilities.
Although i basically spend my free time in the pool and the hot tub.

Good luck choosing.

Superstroke

PS. Oh yeah...almost forgot. It was like...250something per week when i stayed there.
Most likely has gone up since then.
