Deroo Cue discussion

Below is my impression of Deroo Cues.

Please discuss:

Kevin Deroo starts his cues at $1000 and up.

1. Kevin Deroo buys his joint from Falcon. He cannot build a piloted stainless steel joint.

2. Kevin Deroo builds his own laminated shaft by boring the ferrule which is a violation of the 314 patent.

3. Kevin Deroo builds an extension into his cue, which is a design he stole from the inventor from Ontario.

4. Kevin Deroo builds his laminated shaft by cutting up a single piece of maple and then glue them back in the same order, which defies the purpose of having a lamination in the first place.

5. Kevin Deroo builds also a laminated butt exactly the same way as his laminayed shaft, which again, serves no real purpose. It is a poor imitation of the predator 2. He also dyes the butt black and matches it with a steel joint to make it look like a P2.

6. Kevin Deroo uses some fake crystals that look like real diamonds on his cues. But they are not real. He also uses a lot of plastic to imitate ivory. He has no elephant ivory. His cue starts at $1000 and up with these fake material.

7. Kevin Deroo's finish will scratch even when you only press your finger nail against it. It is a soft polymer material.

I have only come across a few of his cues so my opinion is probably not entirely accurate.

1. I believe he did buy his joint at one time from Falcon but I also heard that he has come up with a new joint called "shotgun" joint. I am not too sure about the details. He is from Vancouver but I have only seen about two to three of his cues including one I am selling for a friend of mine now in the for sale section under ebony/holly cue. His cues are not really that common here in Vancouver.

2. I know he makes his own version of a low deflection shaft; nonetheless, it is not porper to discuss whether the 314 patent is violated here on a public forum.

3. He does seem to put all the pieces together in the same order as when he cut them. It is very difficult to see the lamination on his shafts--they look very much like a one piece shaft. He adds a few very short ash(I think it is ash, but not too sure) laminations at the very bottom just above the joint collar. I do not know what they were meant for. Almost everyone who has purchased his cue is playing with a 314 shaft as far as I know.

4. I have seen his laminated butt. I tried the hit, in my humble opinion, I do not think it was in any way similar to the hit of a predator 2. I do agree that it does look very much like a black predator 2. I think he charges about $960 for a black model with no inlay.

5. I do not know if he uses ivory because like I said, there aren't really that many around. The ones I saw were made with some sort of white plastic and/or crystal. He also uses holly wood for his white inlays. He uses a lot of snakewood on his cues.

6. I have heard about the extension rumor but I do not consider it porper to discuss such matters on a public forum.

7. Regarding the finish, I believe he uses some kind of polymer finish and that is why it feels softer than the finish most other cue makers use. He told me he believes his polymer finish has a memory and minor scratches will pop right up after a while and is therefore better.

The ones I have tried were not like a Falcon--they had a much more slim butt and the weight balance was quite different. It was about 17.5 from the butt. And unlike the Falcon, one cannot remove the bumper and change the weight--the bumper was glued on (at least they were with the few that I have seen and tried.)

Hope this helps.

Richard

Always curious to hear people in the city of a cue maker rarely use his cues. What are people there shooting with? Any Mikkelsen cues making their way that far west yet?

It seems to work that way with almost anything. A person is just a local yokel like all of the rest of the local yokels and doesn't gain enough respect for whatever they've accomplished. Someone once told me that you aren't regarded as an expert on anything unless you live at least 50 miles away and preferably a lot further. It's kinda funny in a way but true.
