Any thoughts on adjusting for deflection when using english ? I've been using Predator shafts for quite awhile now and I'd like to go back to the original thicker shaft's. When I try to do it, I'm missing alot and by alot if adding any english. Thanks.......
While not an instructor, I have given some thought to the physics of this problem, and I offer the following, which I believe to be correct:
- The most straightforward solution is to bridge at the pivot point of your cue and use BHE. This minimizes your deflection and leaves you with swerve to deal with, and this can be minimized by increasing shot speed.
- Since you can't always bridge at your pivot point, adjustment of your BHE with FHE is needed when you don't.
- When your bridge is in front of the pivot point, the FHE shift of the front hand is to the side of the CB that you are putting english on. When your bridge hand is behind the pivot point, the front hand shift is to the opposite side to the english.
- Remember: LD shafts have pivot points of around 18", so with one of these, your bridge will always be in front of the pivot point. So, a slight FHE shift needs to be coupled with your BHE to minimize deflection.
- Example: Suppose you are shooting with 6mm (40%) right english using an LD shaft with a pivot point at 18", and your bridge is at 10". In order to minimize deflection, you would set up by parallel shifting about 3mm to the right, and then use BHE to point the cue at the desired impact point. So, in a sense, using half FHE and half BHE improves your deflection situation, but does not change swerve.
