Deuel VS Morris? Was there a deal?

7th place pays 42k, a final 6 spot guarantees at least 50k.

Morris could have asked for the difference and/or a percentage of
Deuel's future earnings in the tourney. This would make good business
sense for both parties, the ethics of the situation are another story.

Deuel's outstanding play in his match against Morris by no means indicates a deal was never brokered. He could have run an 8 pack, yet with a deal
already in place, it would be tantamount to running racks in practice.

Perhaps we should ask Quinten Hann for his opinion, lol

Ethics?

For many years I've observed pool struggle for respectability as a legitimate sport, a sport that I feel deserves recognition and support. The IPT has finally offered hope that this objective may happen, and that the world class players who compete in its arenas may finally get the recognition and respect they deserve.

And so, when some lizard slithers out from under a rock, making a completely unfounded suggestion that players may have fixed a match, it disgusts me. Your wild and potentially destructive speculation in a public forum is despicable. In fact, I would cheer if Rodney and/or Corey sued you for slander.

Sue for slander? Ridiculous. Smash is just speculating.

Rodney just plain ran out of gas. He knew he had the final 6 locked up when he won his 4th game. The pressure was off, and he relaxed a bit.

Corey came with 3 break and runs.

The fact is that on any given day either one of these guys can beat the other.

Of course looking at the chart, if Rodney beat Corey, then guess who would have advanced to the final 6. None other than Bustamante. Now who do you think Rodney would rather face in the final 6? Corey or Bustamante? Perhaps Rodney was just playing the percentages. He sure does know Corey very well and has played him a bunch of times.

But if Bustamante, or Boyes, or Alcaide had won one more match then in all probability any one of them would have had a higher average than Corey and would have moved up. Their destiny was solely in their hands no matter the outcome of the Deuel/Morris match.

Speculation is just plain fun. I would never expect a pool player to ever do anything unethical.

Apology

Smashmouth:
I've received a PM from someone with more insight than I into the matter you raised. In view of the information he provided me, I think you should be applauded, not condemned, for bringing the issue of fixing to the surface.

Please accept my apology.
Ted

First off, I have no "inside" information what so ever.

One can't help but wonder if there was not a deal, but the score of 8-1 makes me doubt it a bit. If there was a deal, wouldn't Morris has at least won a few more games? The winning percentage is so important, wouldn't the deal include him getting at least 5 or 6 games?

While we're speculating ... how about a saver in the finals? Pretty huge difference between 500G and 150G. But how confident would you be of getting paid something like 100G by the winner? Temptation would be mighty strong!

I think for guys who profess to love the game of pool you are doing a disservice to the game by fueling the fire. You could provide a positive service by providing something other than innuendo. If you have something concrete please provide it to us believers.

Been there, seen that

I have run many tournaments over the years and it's common knowledge among tournament directors that the kind of dealmaking that you guys are speculating about is a downside of having a round robin tournament format....Years ago, when I ran some tournaments for Chris ( former owner of Chris's Billiards ) we discussed this potentiality before deciding which format to run.

Here's a parallel situation from the past ( and lovers of the "lily-white" game of 3 cushion billiards and it's players please don't jump on me for this story - I'm just the messenger as to what transpired ).....About 15 years ago Chris's billiards had a very serious, prestigious, World 3 Cushion Billiard Tournament where the format was 6 man round robin flights similar to the IPT format.....Well, Sang Lee, ( a tremendous player, and friend/acquaintance of mine, may he rest in peace ) had 1st place in his flight and a spot in the finals locked up with one match left to play in his flight....Well coincidentally his final match was against his best friend who if he beat Sang, he would move on to the finals and if he didn't beat Sang he wouldn't - One more fact you need to know - Sang was decidedly a better player than his friend....Well, as you have probably already guessed, Sang lost the game to his friend and there was some serious whispering and speculating going on in the stands afterwards.

It's okay to bring up the idea of deals being made. Who knows, who cares. The IPT has rules in place for collusion so the players who consider it know that expulsion from the tour could cost them far more than any deal they could make.

Any time there is big money or some kind of other prizes at stake then there will be the constant temptation to maximize the win in any manner possible.

If you look at the Tour de France, or Formula 1 you have to know that while each rider/driver is "trying" to win it for themselves they are also part of a team that helps each other. I wouldn't be suprised at all to learn that such activity is happening in the IPT. And unless you have incontrevertible evidence of activity that is not allowed you just have to go with the flow.

The IPT itself likes to fuel the nationalist flames so they shouldn't be surprised if their players take it to heart and maximize the chances for their countrymen when the opportunity arises.

All that said, I don't think Rodney cares who he plays in the final six group. I have known Rodney for a while now and I can tell you that he is pretty easy going about pool. When he's on it doesn't matter who he faces and when he's off any shortstop can get lucky. If Rodney brings his A game then it wouldn't much matter who the final six players are.
