Dick Henry (Colorado Springs)

Anyone remember a guy named Dick Henry (maybe Hendry) in Colorado Springs? He was my dad’s best friends while we lived there for about three years in the early 70’s. My dad said nobody could beat him on a bar table from about 71-73. When he broke it seemed like the balls were fighting to find a pocket... he’d pocket thee balls on the regular sometimes four. My father lost track of him when we moved overseas and when we got stateside again he heard he relapsed with some mental health issues. At times player’s games peak and valley for different reasons. Sometimes with personal struggles that are going in their lives but from 1971-1973 he could not be beat. I know he has long since passed away. My dad says to this day he’s never seen anyone break the balls on a bar table better than Dick Henry. I love to find a picture of him if anyone happens to have one.

i knew him a little bit and he was a feared player but not as good as you remember him to be.
i dont recall his break. but he had a chemical problem if i remember right and same dick henry as there were a few of them around.
was he kind of a fat guy.

Fat guy sounds right. I’m sure we are talking about the same guy. Not questioning your recollection and chemical problems are probably true as I did say many players game ebbs & flows at times for different reasons. Also now that now that you mention your recollection I do remember my dad saying that when we first moved to Colorado Springs people told him that this Dick Henry guy was a player and when my dad finally met him my father was not all that impressed. Then one day out of nowhere Dicks game was unreal. And when I say from 1971 to 1973, that’s when we lived in Colorado Springs so somewhere in that time is when I’m talking about. Now at the time I was 5-6 years old so I’m taking what my father said. But I will add that my father was around the Colorado Springs pool scene pretty much every night so I don’t doubt it. My father grew up in his oldest brother’s pool hall and his other brother is Little Al. If you ask Little Al about Dick Henry I’m sure he’d tell you pretty much the same thing. Before we moved to Colorado Springs and after we left I could not tell you anything about where Dick Henry’s game was but during that time he could beat anyone.

There was a older guy who played in the HCPL against us in the early 80s that had the best bar table 8 ball side break I've ever seen. Its still memorable.. Very difficult to repeat with the new smaller cue balls. But when you see it you know. I remember the name but can't picture him.

Bills a member and moved to Manitou a lot earlier than me and was one of the top players in the Springs back then. I'll ask if remembers him.

Yeah him ending up going crazy is what I know. He was a dear friend to my father and they were pretty tight while we lived there so thank you for that info and sharing!

Saw Dick Henry early seventies playing Jerry Brock at the Playpen?
Lounge/burlesque bar on Nevada Ave North of Fillmore.
Playing on a coin op for $30 a rattle.
Andy DeJesus's bar.
Adre's dad, a good man.
Took many/many hours for Brock to win.
Dick had a great giggle smile in his ways.
Was a natural on a pool table, big or small.
He'd spend away time in the cookoo's nest from time to time.
Grady liked his game and Dick would frequent his room & Matthews steering em around.

Thanks for sharing. I’ve heard the name Andy DeJesus many times.
My father would take me with him to one of the pool halls from time to time and I also remember a guy that had long hair that my father would refer to as Mike “The Hippie”. I don’t know if that’s what my father used to refer to him or that’s what everyone called him.

Yep there were allot of hippie pool player$. Louie Lemke/guitar/gal/pool cue/van.
