The first world cup for 2016 is over and Dick Jaspers of the Netherlands is the winner. He played an exceptional tournament with his best game 40 in 8 (a 5,0 average).

But here in the US we must all be proud of the incredible effort made by our 8-time national champion Pedro Piedrabuena. Pedro made it all the way to the semi-final round and finished equal 3rd with former World Champion Eddie Merckx of Belgium. This was his best showing ever in International play. He really has stepped up his game and is of course the big favorite to win another championship in March.

I posted a complete story of the event with results tables and pictures on my website http://www.3cushionbilliards.com

Special thanks goes out to the UMB and our friends at Kozoom.

This also shows the mercurial nature of high level 3C, as Jaspers was incredibly fortunate to survive his first round game against Cenet.

Dick Jaspers had tense closing moments when he managed to just deny Lütfi Cenet, who had the match all but won. The Dutchman showed his strength at 39-33, when his opponent could not score from three match points, and Jaspers forced a shootout. The first one ended 4-4, the second was won by Jaspers: 2-1.

If you give a world class player 3 match points you are very fortunate to win. He was also pretty fortunate to win against Pedro, after Pedro dominated play following the break but could just not climb out of the hole he dug himself in the first half of the match.

I thin that both the Cenet match and the Piedrabuena match demonstrates what Bert Van Manen was talking about in his most recent column, how the top players get to play so much more in the kinds of events that their experience makes them extra tough.
