Did I ruin my shaft?

I thought I'd have this back by now so I could leave feedback, but it's not going to be shipped until Monday. Here's what I did: I bought a Predator SPJU off a kid in a pool room a while back. It was beat up pretty bad and I got it cheap. I sent if off to Proficient Billiards to be completely refinished, have a new butt cap put on, and also to have a phenolic tip/ferrule combination put on it. I also wanted a uniloc joint put in the butt to make a jump/break cue. (I know I know Predators don't jump well.) Anyway, I decided against the uniloc joint and just had the tip/ferrule combination put on and the cue refinished. Since then I've read all the posts about Predator shafts and how people screw them up by putting different ferrules on them. I guess I screwed mine up as well. I'll just have to wait and see what kind of job they did on it. I called Proficient Billiards and told them to use either a phenolic combo or an aegis ferrule with water buffalo tip. Whichever is easiest for them is what they'll do I guess. I specifically told them that the cue would be used for breaking. Any comments? Did I ruin the shaft? Do you think they filled the hollow section for me?

The way I've read all these threads is that the original Predator ferrule can't handle breaking because it is soft and thin-walled. You changed that so I don't think breaking will be a problem. The new somewhat heavier ferrule might contribute to more deflection, but if you're only breaking with it no harm done I guess.

hmm, I break with my pedator playing cue all the time. I have not seen a decrease in the quality of playability, maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones

I guess you might be or you don't break as hard as the people having problems. I've a friend who has had the ferrule replaced on his Predator BK because he crushed it breaking.

yeah like I said I'm probably just been real fortunate with that. There are probably a lot better break cues out there when it comes to wear and tear on the product verses longevity. I work in a billiards store so the deals I get on these products make it worth my while to try them

Is this the cue, that you said the other day, has been gone for eighteen days? If so, that would probably explain, why your turn-around has not been as fast as many others claim. I was under the impression you were just getting it refinished, when I read that.

Yep... we are a little busy right now, but working through all of the jobs. This cue was received the end of the week of the 6th and started on Monday May 9th and was scheduled to go out on Thursday the 19th, but the shaft finish didn't polish up to our expectations. And we needed another day to make the job correct. Anyway here are some pics of the cue and the break ferrule. Should be a good break cue... might even play good if you stay close to center.

Why thank you very much. I was in no complaining about the turn around time. I've just been worried that I maybe should've left the ferrule alone. Thanks for the replies

when i was playing with a predator.......i had a cuemaker put a wood dowel in the hollow spot and thread an ivory ferrule on the shaft..........basically "depredatorizing" the shaft. seemed to have the same low deflection to me.

when i was in nyc i let tony robles hit with it, and he said the same thing, that the aim was the same as his non tampered with predator cue.

so, no i don't think you messed it up at all.........its all about personal preference anyway.

The pictures look really great. Please don't think I was rushing you or complaining about the service. I was just excited about getting the cue back.
