Did the WPA do right?

a deal was in place, fees, plans, reservations, announcements issued and blessings and payments made to the governing body,
so the event in Canada was secured

when a 2nd party steps in and makes a longer, more lucrative deal for all parties (which includes the women) and the first event gets cancelled but not announced by the WPA because the decision was not made by the WPA, it was made on the North American side.

The WPA couldn't negotiate better with China and simply say the deal is "done" with Canada, monies paid and arrangements finalized.

If it must be, then lets secure the following 5yrs in China for the betterment of the sport.

It's a crazy pool world.

We were told we could run the W8B for this year. But that would make no sense, to begin a tournament that you could not continue to grow, so we will make new plans for a new event. Who knows, the other promoter could still try to put one on this year, I do not know.

but it's a tough situation for all involved.

My only hope is that better communications resume from this and we continue to build.

I'm not sure I understand this. Why couldn't the World 8 ball championship be held in Toronto this year, then the Chinese pick up the event next year and run it to the end of their agreement with the WPA? as for the Toronto promoter, could you not still have the World Championship this year, and begin another prestigious tournament next year? It seems that there is a plan for a new tournament next year in place. I am not faulting the Toronto promoters; it seems they are trying to do the right thing in their mind, but the WPA should not take the fees, approve the deal, then renege.

It didn't seem like the WPA reneged on anything. The posts yesterday by "the Toronto promoters" made it sound like they themselves decided not to do it this year because they wanted to only do it if they could grow it in future years. According to their own ABR interview it was only going to have 64 entries this year, pretty small for a WPA Championship, but better I guess than not having one at all.

Odds on the tournament even taking place next year and the following, as currently being hyped?

I can buy that, but it seems a little strange that we have a done deal, then its canceled when someone with more money shows up; Toronto cancels when they can't make the World 8 ball bigger and better, BUT we're going to hold another event next year that we hope to make prestigious.
Maybe all is well, but it appears Toronto is taking the high road, and somebody else is taking a LOW road
